you should run the chkdsk utility sit back and watch it recover the lost files it might take some time

what service pack are you running ? if you have service pack 3 installed you can not reinstall the OS period , you'll have
to remove the service pack 3 and go back to service pack 2
ram and the HDD don't have any connection with the OS
