Buffalo Technology 320GB MINISTATION TURBO USB 2.0 5400 RPM PORTABLE HDD Hard Drive - Page 4 Questions & Answers
Remove all programs and encryptsion software from buffalo minista
I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most portable / external hard drives (though not always)
BUT the section that may be of interest to you is just after step 5.
A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems similar steps may be adapted to suit.
1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability
2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)
3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.
4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply
Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.
5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again.
If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues carry on reading.
Go to your control panel and then administrative tools, select Computer Management.
Now select Disk Management and expand the window.
Your drive should be listed here, if not then you need to check your computer hardware has not got any issues before proceeding.
If your drive is listed and says healthy then right click on it an select Properties, click Tools and then Error Checking, Check now, tick the two boxes and then Start.
This will attempt to fix most minor / common errors on the drive. It may also ask you to restart which is fine. Allow it to finish its work or you could corrupt the drive. If all went well you should be able to use it normally again.
If you drive was listed but did NOT say healthy then right click and select Format. Choose NTFS as the file system and do not tick any boxes you do NOT want quick format. Again start and let it do its thing. When it is done restart your computer and you should be good to go.
If you still have problems with the drive you might want to look at other areas.

Just purchased buffalo ministation and it shows as full
Try this ...
Depending on your operating system, you will need to find the Disk Manager (not the Hardware Manager).
In the Disk Manager you will see your harddrive but possibly no Drive Letter associated with it. It should give you the option to format the disk and assign it a letter.

Hard drive not recognized by vista or xp
Did you go to microsoft and try to see if you could update any drivers or software that might help you? it's free (microsoft.com) It couldn't hurt to try, have microsoft scan for updates, and it will come up with a list of what's needed or required. Also on your computer, under control panel, updates, make sure you turn off automatic install and allow you to pick what you would like to install. hope it helps, e-mail at

Any computer or laptop cannot read or detect my buffalo external HD.every time i plug it in, i would hear a sound that indicates it is plugged in yet, when i check my computer, i cannot find it there.
If You have a yellow Triangle, you know the one you deleted, it means that there is no driver, or the wrong driver is installed for those plugins! then I would say that You need drivers for your USB plugins! If you have the drivers disk that came with your PC/laptop, reinstall them, or go online to the maker of your PC/laptop and get the drivers from them! after reinstalling USB drivers. If it still is unrecognized, try a different USB cable form hard drive to PC.

Forgot external drive password
If there isn't any data on there that you need, you can try formatting it. If you didn't make a recovery disk, or make any note of the password, formatting may be the only solution.

How do i recover serial number on buffalo ministation HD-PNTU3
Load Nas Navigator2 and it will bring up it's built-in web page. When it finds it it will display it's properties inc. serial number. The default user is 'admin' and the password is 'password' as default.. unless you have changed that. If that doesn't work look to Buffalo Support as they are very good.

Clicking noise
Clicking sounds are never good in a hard drive. It always indicates some sort of hardware failure or mechanical problem. Here is a guide on how to initially diagnose your issues with hard drive problems.
Diagnosing Data Recovery
Ultimatley you need to assess the value of the data on the drive in order to determine if you need recovery help. If the data is valuable then you will want to consult a professional that has the proper environment to safely reocver your data from the failing drive. Every move you make will ultimately determine or lesson the chances for successful recovery.

My device is not being recognized
It looks like Linux Mint is not a supported OS.
Buffalo Americas
Only the following are supported:
Windows 8 (32-bit/64-bit), Windows 7 (32-bit/64-bit), Windows Vista (32-bit/64-bit), Windows XP, Mac OS X 10.5 or later
The Linux Mint Dev Team may be working on a solution, but this is not something Buffalo will help you with.
