The safe maker has a list of the codes, and you can purchase back up keys for them generally. It varies how tha works by company, but you can go online with the serial number, which is often stamped in the metal outside the safe, and with that, and typically some other information, get a key to open the safe mailed to you. Otherwise, call a lock smith. They may be able to help you directly.

Good idea. I like to tell people to use numbers from the first phone number they ever had to memorize. It's safe because it was probably not your phone number, you probably still remember your parents making you memorize it, and if you've been around for a while, it's probably not still in use.

As for how to reset it, since you didn't say what kind of lock, I'd advise searching in YouTube for the brand name and the words "reset combination" to find a video about how to do it.

We had an issue similar to this; we bought a new lead, thinking it was that. It ended up being the port on the back of the machine. Luckily, we had another FDU to use.

I would recommend taking the deadbolt back to wherever you purchased it from and exchanging it for a new one. It sounds like you got a defective unit.
