Jl Audio 500/1 Car Audio Amplifier - Page 4 Questions & Answers
Hello,
If your sure the unit is getting the correct power, check the ground cable, make sure it is connected to a clean surface. (remove any paint where the ground is connected.) Double check your wiring. Make sure all of your connections are good. Do not forget the fuse holder, check it too.
My amp smokes when pounding the subs?
You are probably asking the amp to supply more power than it is capable of doing. Make sure the minimum impedance is not being surpassed by your setup. Also make sure the amp is set up in a well ventilated area in order to increase airflow and heat dissipation to the unit. If you are under the minimum impedance for your amp you WILL damage it with continued use.
THERMAL LIGHT IS BLINKING AN
Your amp has overheated. You need to pick a new place to mount it, somewhere with better ventilation, or you can buy a cooling device for it. The only other option is to play your music quieter because the amp cannot handle the power output you are requesting without overheating. The light will not go off until the amp's heatsink drops to a temperature level safe enough for normal operation.
I have the older jl 500/1 its black and i believe
The best advice i can offer is to take it to a JL technician and have the amplifier professionally repaired. The amplifier you have is a very good amplifier, so having it repaired by a professional, is worth it. After you repair it, make sure to run a 4 Gauge cable to the amplifier this time around.

I have a jl audio 500/1. I had the amp
Go back to where you got it installed and ask them to fix it.
If you don't want to do that I would recommend going to another good car audio shop and getting them to check it out.
You can test it yourself by hooking up an iPod to it using a Headphone to RCA cable.. test at low volume first.
I have a jl500/1 amp
yes the amp can be blown and not show protect. I do warranty work for JL Audio. Have you tested your subs to see if they are ok? If they are then something internally is stopping the amp from working. I repair amps very cheaply to help out fellow car audio enthusists. I am the cheapest in the US. If you have not figured this out yet and want it repair let me know. Send me a message. Btw, I’m available to help over the phone in case u need at

I have a jl 500.1 and a 8w7. The sub is playing
Sounds like a bad rca connection. You need both rca jacks to be plugged in from your head unit, both left and right or you will not have full power you'll have half power to your sub/subs. Check your sub with a volt meter and see what it reads. Make sure if your head unit has a sub volume make sure it's turned up. Alot of people don't realize they have a seperate subwoofer volume on there deck and it's set to low, so check that. You could have bad rca cables. If all that is ruled out(best way by trying a different amp) the amp itself might be having problems. Don't think it would be in protect mode either.

My jl audio amp 500/1 keeps losing power or
Sounds as if you might have a bad ground or other poorly connected power wires. When you turn it up the amp is looking for more power but it can't get it hence the amp shutting down. You need to go over your positive cable connection from battery to amp and also make sure you have a good ground. Also it depends on where you bolted your ground too. Did the amp not do this before and now it does or did you just get it and put it in and it's doing it. Try another amp if possible. Your subs might be bad also or running at the wrong ohms. This amp puts out the same wattage at 1.5 to 4 ohms. I think personaly you got a bad power connection cause the amp is starving for power when you turn it up. It depends on a few different reasons why this is happening. Last thing would be the power supply in the amp itself. I just need to know if it recently started doing this or is this a new install amp for you. Let me know so I ca further assist you. Btw, I’m available to help over the phone in case u need at

My amp powers on but
Have you tried your subs on another amp???? Or hook up a small speaker at low volume to the amp and see if it plays....If it doesnt, then the problem lies within your speaker output on your amp or your line out (rcas) on your stereo
I HOOKED EVERYTHING UP CORRECTLY BUT THE AMP WOULD
If the amp is a JL 500/1v2, it has a sensing switch which enables it to sense voltage, instead of running a remote wire. If this switch is set to on, and you have a remote turn on wire running to the amp........this can happen. I own one of these, and made that mistake myself.
My amp cuts out at higher volume
This happens to me all the time during the warm months. The problem is likely that the amplifier is overheating because of location. If not properly ventilated, the amplifier will shut off before damage occurs. Is it located under a seat or other area where sufficient air flow is lacking? I solved this problem by moving my amplifier from under a seat to the trunk area.
So my jl 500/1 v2 has power and no audio... i get
Okay lets go step by step. First check and sure you have battery voltage and twelve volt turn on on the remote term. of your amp. Be sure u have a ground also. Next take your speaker leads disconnect them and pop them with a battery, and make sure it pops. I(f that all passes you need to make sure your amp is getting an input signal because you could have a bad rca cable.
I have a 500/1 mono jl audio amp and two w3 10"
not really a problem, your just running a the threshold of the amps comfort zone, a lil trick to raise your impedance a little bit its to run an additional 10 feet of wire before your sub, (longer the wire the more resistance) 10 feet should jump you up about .5 ohms. you wont hear the difference but your amp will fill it, and run a little better. 20 feet will give you right around 1 ohm. now if you dont mind loosing some power run the subs in series and then run them bridged. your amp will work harder, but run easier because its on a big open loop. but before all this take a multi meet and read out your voice coils to see what the ohm level is, then read out what it is at the speaker, then you will see 1. if the subs are okay, and 2. how much you need to raise your impedance for you amp to run comfortably.
My JL 500/1 has worked
Check your grounds to the speakers and to the Amp as well as the connection that was made to the battery.

you dont want to connect both of those amplifiers together. You could run them separately to separate subs or the jl to your sub and your alpine to your front speakers. But you dont ever want to mix and match amps to the same sub. Even if you had 2 jl500/1's you wouldnt want to just hook them up together. Because they both have to be putting out the exact same amount of power. Which no 2 amps are ever exactly the same. Some companies make bridges to properly connect 2 exact amps together. I Hooked up 2 JL 1000/1's to each voice coil on a 13.5 W7 and i smoked the sub. So i definitely dont reccommend doing it unless the amps are conneccted to separate things.
I hooked up the 500/1 amp and when the bass hits
Check your ground connections. Alot of times when the amplifier is pushed to its higher levels of power if it doesnt have a solid ground connection it will kind of choke itself. Also with the amplifier you should make sure there are no knicks or anything in the power cable. Make sure you are running a 4awg power and ground cable with solid and clean connectors on the ends. Also that amplifier needs a good anl fuse holder with at least 100 amp fuse.
Screws stripped
What screws are stripped on the amp? The input for power or speaker inputs?
I have a jl audio
if its the fuse in the fuse link then you should be using the a 50A fuse thats if on your amp there is fuses that total 60A when you add it up and if it still blows then you might have a short in the power wire between the battery and the 50A fuse
