I would check to make sure you don't have a cable or headphones plugged into the Audio In jack. If not then I would suspect that you have a newer Ipod touch or classic that is not supported by this dock. Something changed a couple of models ago with ipods and the last two generations haven't been compatible on older devices meant to play through the dock connector. I have the same problem with an older Sony car stereo. If you do have a newer Ipod then you can either get the patch cable to go from your headphone jack to the Audio in jack on the dock or you will need to get a newer dock. https://docs.sony.com/release/ICFC1IP.pdf
