System turns on but is nonresponsive and doesn't work.

Did you get the im600 wet? I have a similar problem, and I've been touching the power and volume buttons with wet fingers. I believe the design allows for liquid to enter the unit, and then it short circuits. Also found gummy residue around the pin, in the power connector on the back. Hope that helps.

Won't charge or turn on

I think this is a common problem witht he Altec family when the external power pack goes faulty - a new one is not worth the money compared to the cost of jumping ship and buying a new system.

Where the ipod goes the male connector has broken

It's going to be difficult if not impossible to find the exact replacement, You can however replace it with a suitable connector such as:

Pinouts can be found here:

I hope this helps,

Problem with Altec Lansing inMotion 600 speaker

My IM600 did the same thing to me, here my solution:
1) Turn offand disconnect power cord
2) Take battery out (2 small screws on the back)
3) Disconnect battery
4) Short circuit all 3 battery terminals (with this you make sure battery is not in a latency/histeresis state)
5) Leave open and disconnected for a couple of hours
6) Assemble all back
7) Turn it on and it works
8) If it doesn't replace battery

How do you hook up the laptop to the docking

You should be able to hook up the laptop using a common audio cable, one end hooking up to the audio-in port in the docking station, and the other end hooking up to the audio port in the laptop.

First of all, here is a direct link to the ONLINE USER"S MANUAL for that model:

To view the Owner's Manual with Operating Instructions just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the information in the Owner's Manual.

You may need ADOBE READER installed on your computer to read PDF documents.
You can download this free at WWW.ADOBE.COM if necessary.
Click on the DOWNLOAD ADOBE READER button on right side of the ADOBE home page when you get there.

See page 5 of the ONLINE USER'S MANUAL for detailed instructions on how to troubleshoot the lack of sound from the speakers.

Basically you need to check that the volume is turned up, that a proper source is selected and that the source is properly docked.

If the battery is fully charged and the troubleshooting suggestions in the manual do not work, then it may be a hardware fault like a loose wire or bad component inside the unit which requires some disasssembly to repair.

Obviously return it for a refund or no cost repair if the warranty is still valid before attempting any internal repairs yourself.

Please comment back here to this page if you have any questions, have difficulty accessing the link, or just require further general assistance and I will respond as soon as I see it.

return it if u can. I have a similar problem because the prong in the device does not set properly with the charger. It appears to have
worn over time. I have had it 18 months. When I contacted Altec Lansing they basically said it was out of warranty and the do not provide lifetime warranties for these types of problems.
I will never buy another product of theirs.

How do I open the altec lansing inMotion im600? I

There is a button on the front of the unit that is just below the LCD readout that shows FM / iPod status. Press the button. If it does not open the unit, you may need to tap the back of the unit when doing this or else get something to gently pry open the unfolding section WHILE THE BUTTON IS PRESSED (otherwise you'll break the mechanism and won't be able to lock it again. It sounds like whatever you put in to create the connection may be jamming up your opening.
The unit comes with several adapters for different iPod models, you may want to try a different adapter; you shouldn't need to put anything else in it to maintain a connection. If you don't have those adapters anymore, you can probably get them off the altec lansing web site.

That is a tough one. Is your iPod fully seated -- will it play music in the im600? Have you tried a different iPod in the im600 to see if it charges? Does your iPod recharge normally in other players, in a wall charger and your computer? If not, your iPod could possibly need a new battery.
Also: since it was unplugged for 3 weeks, you may just need to run the im600 through a full cycle or two (let the FM radio play until the battery is dead, with no iPod in it), then recharge the im600 for 5 or 6 hours, and THEN mount your iPod into it and see if it charges it. Be sure to unplug/plug-in the adapter into the im600 to ensure it is getting full power from the wall outlet. One last thing: the im600 will only charge the iPod when it is plugged into AC power; it won't charge the iPod while it's running on its own battery power. Good luck!

Mine also does this from time to time. I've had it for 4 or 5 years now so I think it's just a matter of wear and tear. I find that if I press down gently but firmly on both sides of the TOP of the iPod/iPhone, to firmly seat it, that will get the im600 back to stereo sound. This is easier to notice while you are playing the device with the volume turned up so you can hear it go into stereo mode.

Altec Lansing will not charge

I have had a similar problem, where the battery LED lights up, then shuts off, but I could not 'power-on' the unit using the on/off button on the front. I measured the battery voltage, and was reading 4V, so that appeared ok, as says 3.7V on its label, However, even with the battery removed, the i600 would still not power on using either its integrated button, or by using the remote control.
I plugged the battery back in, and all is ok!
The battery is accessed by removing just two screws with a cross head, and pulling its cover off. Soi appears that simply removing the battery from its connection, and plugging it in again has cured the prob?
Give it a go, if you haven't already? My unit has been solid/robust/reliable and gets a lot of use and travel, and was gutted that it could need completely replacing.

Cannot open im600

I own the im600 and I have managed to take it apart far enough to fix it. I saw no screws to open the system, but I saw that the grille was loose, so carefully I took it off using a tweezer with a sharp point (sticking it in the holes is the grille near the edge, using the tweezer as a lever) after some time the grille was off. After that I could take the speakers out etc. Maybe this could help you. Only thing is that I haven't figured out yet how to open the whole system and exposing the circuitry etc, it stays stuck at the display somehow (if you figure it out, please tell me )
