INOP low beam and high beams

The problem is the headlight switch itself - it's one of the most common failures on these cars. The part, brand-new, is about $158 from ECSTuning.com. Replacing it involves removing the airbag and steering wheel - not difficult but a little nerve-wracking due to the power of the airbag.

If this is something you want to tackle on your own, reply back here and I can give you a step-by-step on doing the work yourself. Or you can go to a shop/dealer and just have them do it. They'll probably charge you at least two hours' labor, even though it's a 40 minute job. Let me know what you would like to do.

I have an Audi A4 1996 model year.. I have the

maybe this will help..... the following steps must be carried out in the correct order:
  • Turn on the radio - the word "SAFE" appears in the display.
Press the FM 1 and AM buttons simultaneously and hold them down until "1000" lights up in the display. Release the buttons! Do not, under any circumstances, continue holding them down or press them once again. This would cause the radio to consider the number "1000" to be the input code number.
  • Use station buttons 1 to 4 to input the code number on your Radio Card. Use button 1 to input the first digit of the code number, button 2 to input the second digit, and so on.
For technical reasons, the first digit can only be a 1 or left blank. The following three digits, however, may be any number from 1 to 9 .
  • Once the code is shown on the display, press the FM 1 and AM buttons again simultaneously and hold them down until the word "SAFE" appears in the frequency display. Release buttons! Soon afterward, a frequency will be displayed.
  • Should you inadvertently input the incorrect code number in attempting to release the electronic lock-up, the word "SAFE" will appear in the display - first blinking and then continuous. You can now repeat the entire canceling procedure once. The number of attempts will be shown in the display. If you input another incorrect number, your radio will be locked up for approximately one hour . The radio will not play. Leave the radio switched on. After an hour, the display with the number of attempts goes out and you can cancel the electronic lock-up as described above. This cycle - two attempts, one hour lock-up still applies.
Best to you.

95 Audi Cabriolet-Can't get key fob to work/program

Find a VAG specialist Indy garage with the VCDS software on a PC.
They can program them that way if the programming you've tried doesn't work.

The key does need to be correct for the vehicle in MHz range and software, as they upgraded them through the years.

Speed-o-meter and RPM gauge do not work

if the engine is running fine and no limp mode no engine lights. abs is working then the only other thing could be the dash may need replacing as putting the battery on wrong can blow the electronics in the dash as they are both linked. i ask is there any other problems as the rev counter work to ecu in line with speedo and the abs unit to determine timing etc. speedo works of the abs system the connection between them both is the board in the dash board. you can replace the boards in the dash but you will need replacement dash parts to do this but remember if you change the dash you need to log the miles as new dash will have different miles and uk mot log your miles to dvla. USA i dont know you would need to look into this.

Audi A4 Auto, Gear changing trouble

Did you change the transmission filter? Sounds like no Front pump pressure. dirty filter will cause cavitation of the pump and damage to pump. Damage to cutch packs will occur too. Do not run until investigating filter, make sure o ring or grommet in valve body is present for filter

Manual close for sunroof

You can try cleaning and lubricating the runners. The sunroof will open as soon as it is obstructed, eg. A childs arm in the way of closing. The problem here is that you can hear the motor running, wich indicates a broken cable, or a stripped plastic gear.

Update on my problem to audi a4 1.8 1996

The MAF has been a source of trouble for Audi such that the cost of replacement was halved a few years ago. I am not sure why replacing the MAF would produce white smoke - white smoke being symptomatic of steam from water or coolant ingress into the cylinders or extreme amounts of fuel entering the cylinders. The latter is almost exclusively a diesel problem. Generally if the MAF is suspected of being the cause of rough running then disconnecting it will cause the engine management to switch to the get-you-home programme. If the engine runs better the MAF is probably faulty.. As a matter of interest, it is necessary when changing parts on Audi that only the correct parts are used. Not only must they look right and be intended for that year and model but the part numbers should also be correct. A couple of digits out isn't close enough... I am not sure where the idle thingy is on your Audi - the earlier models used a throttle body with the idle/throttle sensor and idle control all integrated in one very expensive lump and that is how I discovered the importance of correct part numbers. In order to save my customer from scrapping what was otherwise a good car, I took a can-opener to the throttle body and opened it and found two broken wires and mananged to repair them. I needed to do some tricky welding to put it back together. The car went on for another seven years afterwards... The car made no white smoke prior to the repair but the idle was very erratic...

What keeps my floor board soaking wet in my 1996 Audi A4?

First check if the section in front of your windshield is not flooded. Remove the plastic cover and check. This often occurs when the drain (between battery and brake booster) gets clogged. If that is the case, best to remove the battery, and clean that rubber funner (stick finger in or similar). Also possible: check the trim of the A pillar has water stains. If that is the case, the drain of your sunroof is plugged. There are 2 drain holes that connect to hoses that lead to the bottom of the car. Often a shot of compressed air can unclogg them. Also possible: the trim at the bottom of the windshield is not sealing properly anymore, and water run UNDER it (instead of over hit). That water can then run into the cabin air filter (passenger side near windshield under the hood IIRC).
