Can't read data on WD external my book hard drive
Hello,It seems that your WD hard drive is corrupted soyou are unable to access the stored files. But there is no need to worry sinceit is very easy to recover data from corrupted WD partition by using Western digital partition recoverysoftware. If you are getting a corrupted data message you can try to run disk cleanup on the drive to see if this fixes the problem.

If this does not fix the problem then you will need to backup your files off the drive and do a full format. If you still have trouble after formatting the drive this is a sign that the drive is failing.

Can't transfer big files
It is possible your external drive is formatted using FAT32. You need to need to format it to NTFS. Windows XP caps the file size for transfer and will not move them if they are over 4Gigs if I remember correctly.
Make sure you have saved all of your files onto another drive or onto your computer temporarily before you do the next step. The next step will erase all of the contents of your hard drive and you will not be able to get them back.

Go to My computer and right click on your external drive then click on properties. Look at the File System and if it says FAT32 or anything other than NTFS then you will need to do the next step. Again, backup your external drive contents before anything else.
Go to My Computer, right click on the drive and then format it and make sure you choose file system NTFS. You can also choose the quick option to speed things up. You don't say what Mac OS version you're running or many other details, but try running Disk Utility or Disk First Aid, normally in the Utilities folder, and see if it can repair anything.
It sounds like the drive is failing or has already failed.
PS: That Mac G4 is well past its prime. :-(

Typically this occurs when the permissions on your drive have been changed. Do a search on "resetting permissions" on your external hard drive that is specific to the operating system you are using. There are paid programs that can do this but don't be afraid to is a command shell window to carryout this task (this is a window where you actually type in commands with extensions like DOS in the old days). All tutorials out there will show you exactly how to open this shell window and what exactly to type in as a command. If you are not wanting to try then ask somebody you know that is computer savvy to help you out. It's only one command but once started may take sometime to complete depending on the size of your drive and how many files are on it (could take hours).
Password needed?
You will need the smartware disk that comes with the drive to connect to a PC and remove the password protection! If you do not have the disk try downloading from the WD website.

Falls are a huge cause in external hdd failure, though, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if the disk is beyond help. Try connecting to another computer (to see if the problem still occurrs) or another operating system (you can boot to a linux live cd) or, at least, use another USB drive on the computer you are connecting to.
Next step would be to *cross fingers* hope the external enclosure suffered damage, but that the actual drive did not. If you are comfortable doing it (likely voiding your warranty), disassemble your external enclosure and remove your SATA hdd. You can open your PC and connect it to your motherboard assuming you have an available SATA connection, SATA cable, and available SATA power hookup. Alternately, you can buy a 'kit' to connect a hdd to your pc via usb, which prevents you from having to open your PC. It is much more convenient if you can diagnose without purchasing 1-time use hardware, though.

You can try data recovery software, but they haven't been very helpful to me in the case of physical trauma to drive.
Data recovery outfits (expensive) may help if the information is not otherwise recoverable.

if it is new, yes -- your OS should prompt you when you plug it in. if it isn't new (your data is currently on it), i wouldn't recommend initializing. your best bet is to remove the hdd from the enclosure and attach it manually if you are comfortable doing that. of course, it can't hurt to try 1) another usb port or 2) another computer first.
WD 1TB drive only shows up as a 10GB hard drive
WD has a courtesy Drive cloning tool from acronis. It's on their web sit under drivers. Don't worry about the "My Book" thing the file is labeled Acronis True Image WD Edition Software download.

If not removed safely, external devices can lose information when disconnected.
I recommend using a free recovery tool called Handy Recovery which is normally used to recover files accidentally files on a PC. The application can also be used to try and recover files on your external HD.

You need to enter the BIOS setup utility of your PC and change the order of BOOT devices so that it will try to boot from a USB device first (unless your CD, DVD or floppy disk drives do not contain media)

Wd 1 tb - shows no disc space left, but the files on it don't take up much space.
Depending on the Operating System you are using (i.e. Windows or Mac OSX etc.), they deal with deleting files in different ways. In the case of an Apple Mac, it doesn't actually delete you files, but instead moves them to the recycle bin which is located ON your external hard drive. This means that in order to make the space available, you have to empty your recycle bin on your desktop whilst the hard drive is plugged in and it will empty the folder for you. Or look for a hidden folder on the root of your Hard Drive called Recycle and delete it (it will be recreated by your system when your system needs it).
Alternatively, 1TB is a large drive meaning that it is possible that your file structure has become "fragmented". Don't worry yourself with the specifics, but if you right-click on the drive and access the Properties, choose the Tools tab and use the Defragment tool. Also it might be worth using the Check Disk For Errors option, although Defragment is more relevant in this case.
If you run through these basic troubleshooting steps listed above I hope you will gain access to your cleared space.
