MY WD MY NOTEBOOK IS

It does have software for it, but it doesn't require it. Try to connect it to another computer, and if it works there, see if that computer has any detection software. When you connect something to an usb port if it says "this device could work faster" do not hesitate to click that button. Try all of your usb ports. If you use a mac try connecting it to a pc.

I have a clicking noise

The cause of this clicking sound is the arm of the hard drive platter moving as far as it can to the right, in a pattern or randomly. If this write head touches the platter of the hard drive and scratches it, all the data that is stored on that portion will be erased and be unwritable. The hard drive repeatedly attempts to recalibrate the write head, causing the abrupt clicking noises. In most of these cases, the problem is caused by a manufacture defect or physical abuse of the hard drive itself.Unfortunately this is a sign that its worn out also.

Computer doesn't show that device is connected

if your computer came with a motherboard disc the drivers could be on it click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x right click to reinstall drivers or if you can see your usb but its not working ports(com&lpt)right click update driver just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again, sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable, check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems hope this helps

Just got a new WD

How was the drive formated? If it was formated as NTFS, OSX can only read - it won't write.

If you're going to be using it on your Mac, then you should repartition/reformat it in your disk utility. That way you will get better performance out of it.

Recording (?) light on front

Hi,
The Hard Disk activity LED indicator blinks only when there is some Read/ Write activity. In your case if the LED is blinking frequently, it certainly means some activity. It could by due to the following reasons: -
1. Antivirus program automatically scanning the disk
OR
2. Probably due to some virus activity.

So, I suggest that you may check the Antivirus program settings for any automatic/ scheduled scans (as some antivirus programs automatically start scanning the external drive). Secondly, if there appears any virus activity (which is likely) you should update the Antivirus program and scan the system. If you dont have the Antivirus program installed on your PC, to disinfect the system you may install antivirus, update it and scan.
AVG 2011 Antivirus FREE Edition
From the above link AVG can be downloaded and installed for FREE. Its basic antivirus protection.
Install AVG and scan the system.

Hope it helps! Good Luck!

I have the WD External

You might try using a Linux distro like Linux Mint and see if it will mount the drive and
find your files. Just get a live distro with the tools to mount Microsoft file systems.

I backed up files from computer to external hard

Unfortunately, it is impossible to reformat a drive and not lose the data that is stored on it.
I would suggest formatting the drive as NTFS if you are using Windows or HFS if you are using a Mac and then use the software that was included on the drive to backup your computer.
Be sure to copy the software that came ON the external drive to your computer before reformatting. If you are unable to find the software on the drive, you will have to buy the software from Memeo or contact Western Digital for assistance: http://www.memeo.com/choose_backup.php

Windows 7 no drive letter

Hi,

Go to the start menu and in the 'Search Programs and Files' box type:

devmgmt.msc

And hit enter. This will run the Device Manager Console. From here you can see the hardware devices that windows detects. Check that you can see your external drive listed under 'Disk drives'.

If your external drive has a yellow exclamation mark next to it, then you will need to reinstall the drivers for the external drive, but if it is listed with the same grey drive icon as your internal hard drive then the drivers will be ok.

Next go to the start menu and in the 'Search Programs and Files' box type:

diskmgmt.msc

This will load up the Disk Management Console. From here you should see your external hard drive listed. In the bottom half of the window find your external hard drive and note that the screen is split into two, if you click on the right hard side on one of the blue bars, you can select 'Change Drive Letter and Paths' and enter in a different drive letter for your drive to show up as.

If you have any programs installed onto this drive Windows may have some issues with this as it might have a shortcut for a file saved as F:\Folder\Document.doc, and what this does is change the path to something else eg H:\Folder\Document.doc.

But if that works, and you can access the hard drive, restart your PC and then try changing it back to the letter it had first, and you should be fine.

Hello my wife accidentally tripped over the cord

It could be that the data cable separated somewhere not visible, however, it is much more likely that the hard drive its self is damaged. The platters inside the drive spin at very high speeds, the read/write heads pass between the moving platters( very close, but not touching). If a read head does come in to contact with any of the platters while they are spinning, the usual result is a ruined hard drive. Laptop hard drives have systems built in to enable them to survive a certain amount of shock while they are on, but drives meant for use with desktop machines normally have no protection. So, unfortunately even small shocks, like being kicked over while sitting on the floor, can cause a ruined drive.
