If you had that much of a problem then you may be dealing with damaged parts from the overload and even damaged ciruitboards from the acid. Yes you could possibly fix it but you are talking about a few hours of playing around and you need the proper equipment ie meters, a scope, and a soldering station. gripfitter is incorrect, that charger is made to charge in 15 minutes. It has a cooling fan and when batteries are inserted a red light comes on and the fan starts. When light goes out and fan stops, the batteries are charged. (light should not blink as that indicates one or more of the batteries has a problem)

All chargers cannot charge all types of batteries. Are your Duracell batteries NiMH or Alkaline? These indications generally happen when you insert a battery type that is not rechargeable.

Personally I would return the the batteries.

It's not a good idea to run anything that needs a lot of wattage through a power converter using a 12v cigarette lighter plug. Coffee makers work by using a resistant heater element and it might work, but you could damage the coffee maker or the adapter by doing so.
