I have a Philips DVD recorder player 3475.

In the SetUp or Disc menu (depends on what it is called on your remote) go in and look for Disc Edit/CD(DVD)Playback and then finalize.
Choose to finalize the disc and it will close the session so nothing further can be written to the disc, thus making it playable on other DVD players.

Can't play dvd in my sony vaio laptop

The Vaio / Sony combo DVD drives are renowned to be some of the worst on the market. Sony puts the cheapest cr*p in their laptop and it should be no surprise that after a couple of reads (10+) and writes (10+), your combo drive will be as good as junk... dead weight in your laptop. You'll also hear strange repetitive noises coming from it. I have 3 solutions:
1) Go to the Vaio support site, type your model number to get its page and search DVD upgrade firmware. This should 2 files. One is a .bin and the other is an executable to flash the drive with that .bin file. If the problem still persists then bad news.
2) Buy a USB2 external combo drive. This should be real cheap nowadays.
3) Check impactcomputers for a replacement internal drive. Prices have come down but still quite pricey.

Also if you can let those f*cks at Vaio know what you had to go through, that'd be great.

Whenever i try to play

Hi,

There may be another program that is loading thet uses the overlays.
Programs such as pcanywhere or netmeeting in my experience cause this error.

I know that you could try this fix for netmeeting.

Open netmeeting, goto tools, options, then the video tab.
Then
Uncheck the box "Automatically recieve video at the start of each call" Then
click ok.
Close netmeeting and then repeat those steps but this time put in a check
mark.

Then try again.

This has worked for me in the past. Otherwise you might have another
application that is causing this, or possibly it could just be a bad video
driver, in which case you would have to install the latest video driver from
the manufacurer of your computer or your video card.

Hope that helps.

Win dvd 5 came with computer when i purchased it.

can it read data files inside a dvd disc or any cd? if not, you might need to clean the lens using a cd lens cleaner or a soft cloth. Or the cd drive might be defective, which is common sometimes with 1 yr old machines and up

HP compaq nx9420, plays most dvd's, but wont

Try to explore the DVD and see if you see the content. Right clcik on the DVd and select EXPLORE. If the content is viewable the issue could be just specific to the DVd autorun files. You dont need to worry.

I can't play DVDs on my HP laptop even though I could in the past

May I suggest that you try other programs to play your DVD's. Such as VLC media player. This program can play any meida file and is free. Also you could try gom player. Both of these are available off http://download.cnet.com/windows/ As to why your DVD's aren't playing. It may be bcause you have changed regions or because the DVD file is not recognized by the players because they don't have the ability to play certain fornats.
