suggest you connect a pc directly to the printer via ethernet cable or network switch with the computer temporarily having its ip address changed to what ever the printer ip address range was.

Why it prints grey background
Either the toner cartridge is very close to empty or the drum unit needs to be replaced. Check your warning lights. Yellow = toner, red = drum. If no warning lights, pull out the toner/drum unit and remove the toner cartridge. Have a look at the cylinder in the drum (DR2125) - if it is very black and matt looking you will need to have it cleaned or just replace it.
Why has my manual feed stopped working?
I would hazard an educated guess that the pick up roller for the manual bypass slot has become coated with dust and paper fibre. Open the front hatch and remove the toner/drum assembly. Clean the pick up roller just inside the cavity below where the drum "handle" would sit. I recommend alcohol and a cloth wrapped around your finger, and try to rotate the roller to clean as much of it as possible.

I know this is a really old thread, but I recently suffered the same problem after having to move my HL-2170W to a new network. The solution ... unplug the printer, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in. When I did this an ip address of 169.254.167.23 was assigned via APIPA.
