Hello! I had this exact same issue or question, I guess you can call it. And unfortunately, the CD-ROM user guide was a lot more helpful for me than the Book guide. But anyway, to answer your question and anyone else who has this same question ...

What you need to do is locate the ControlCenter3 software on your computer for a little configuration. This automatically installs when you install the printer's complete Pro Suite drivers on your computer.

You might be able to find it somewhere on your start bar (left or right side of the start bar). It's a small blue icon with the acronyms "CC3" on it. Anyway, click to open the software. Once opened, you'll need to make some configurations so that when you scan to file, it'll be "PDF" by default.

So once you have this software open, "right-click" on the circle button that says "File" and choose the option that says "Control Center Configuration". Up pops a dialog box with two tabs - Software Button and Device Button.

Now in order to scan to pdf from your Brother MFC 9840 CDW, you simply need to change the "File Type" in the drop-down box to "PDF" under both tabs. You can optionally also change the "File Name" to a recognizable default file name of your choosing (I chose to change it to say "PDF File") and you can also set your default "Destination Folder" (otherwise your scanned PDF files will automatically be saved in your "Scan" folder). That's it! No need to mess with anything else.

Most importantly, you need to make sure that these exact same configurations are made under both the "Device Button" tab AND the "Software Button" tab as well.

Click "Okay" and now try to re-scan your document as a File. It should automatically scan it as a PDF file to your computer.

I hope this helps solve your problem if you haven't already been able to figure it out.

Reset the drum counter on Brother MFC-9840CDW

The drum unit was replaced because of immovable marks on one of the drums, not because it had exhausted its lifespan. I followed the instructions (Menu, 8, 4) to reset the drum counter, but I cannot get past 'Menu, 8'. (It only gives options 1-3). The drum life usage indicates a life of 64%. Does this mean I'll lose 36% of the life of the new drum? How can I reset the drum counter back to 100%?

Brother MFC-9840CDW wrinkles envelopes. Brother

Brother MFC-9840CDW wrinkles envelopes. Brother says this is "normal", and that the only way to 'fix' it is to open the back of the printer EVERY TIME YOU PRINT AN ENVELOPE and make some kind of adjustment... which is, of course, impossible.
THIS PRODUCT IS DEFECTIVE and the U.S. Attorney should investigate this fraud.

Problem Solved!

I have a Brother MFC-8480 DN all in one printer, copier, fax and scanner.

I discovered that envelopes wrinkle because users, like me, didn't know that Brothers built in a no-wrinkle, pass through exit for envelopes, labels and thick paper.

Envelopes were never to be printed by inserting them in the front and letting them wrap around a HOT roller and get cooked and wrinkled. The way it works:

An envelope is inserted in the front and goes straight out the back of the printer through an exit door, completely avoiding the hot roll-through mechanism.

Take a look. On the back of the machine is a large pass through exit door. Just snap it open. You will see one blue lever on each side of the opening. Snap them both straight down to the . . .ta da. . ."envelope icons".

Put three envelopes in the front and they will print straight out the back, perfect and wrinkle free. After printing your envelopes, snap the blue levers back up and shut the door. Takes about five seconds to open the door and snap down the blue levers down/up.

Happy envelope printing.

Print unable 32 is dirt or scratch on the transfer belt assembly. There's a timing mark on the belt that a sensor must read. If the belt is damaged, you will need a new one.

You could try resetting the toner cartridge settings. OPen the machines front door where you would replace the cartridges. On the top panel you will see a "clear/back" button. Press it and on the display you will see a reset menu come up. Arrow to each one and hit the OK button. Press "1" to reset. Once you have gone through all close the front door of the machine and press stop to bring the display back to normal.

Hope this helps.

its a very common problem.here are the details of belt reset:--

The belt unit in your Brother machine has a life expectancy of approximately 50,000 pages when printing on Letter size media. The actual life expectancy will vary with the media used in the machine, number of pages in a print job, etc. The belt unit must be replaced when the machine displays the message CHANGE PARTS # BELT UNIT.Failure to replace the belt unit may result in print quality issues or media jams.

After the belt unit is replaced, the machine must be told that new part has been installed in the machine # the machine will NOT automatically reset the belt life counter.

To check the life remaining on the current belt unit follow the steps listed below:

1. On the control panel, press MENU, 8 (Machine Info), 3 (Parts Life), 2(Belt Unit)

2. Remaining XX percentage appears on the display.

3. Press STOP/EXIT to return to the Date and Time screen.

To reset the belt unit, perform the following steps:

IMPORTANT # The reset option will NOT be present in the menu if the beltis not ready to be replaced.

1. On the control panel, press MENU, 8(Machine Info), 4(Reset Menu).

2. Press the DOWN arrow until the cursor is over BELT UNIT

3. Press the OK key.

4. Press 1 to reset the belt unit

5. Press STOP/EXIT to return to the Date and Time screen.

This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya.

Brother MFC-9840CDW Tray 1 paper jam

Printer frequently has Paper Jam Tray 1. When we open the tray, the top sheet is displaced about 0.5 inches towards the front of the printer. We have had the paper rollers replaced but this did not help. We are stuck. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The problem is the spring that is located below the lever right in front of the clear plastic roller has lost its spring. If you remove the spring and stretch it a bit it will resolve the problem.
