MFC-9840cdw with "print unable 36. Sometimes I can reboot and get it to print a few pages, but then the error comes back. I've cleaned and checked for ink, paper, etc. everywhere, but can't resolve th
Ok, here is what I found with a bit of internet research. Print Unable 36 error stems from an issue with the High Voltage Power Supply Printed Circuit Board (HVPS PCB).
Possible issues are:
1. The tech accidently didn't properly seat the connectors when re-hooking up the cables if indeed he or she removed any in dealing with your Error Code 32. "Check the two harness connections between the transfer HVPS PCB and Registration Relay PCB, and the two ones between the Registration Relay PCB and Engine PCB. Then reconnect them." If you try this yourself, make sure the machine is unplugged and cycle the power switch to discharge any power supply capacitors. You don't want to mess around with the high voltage. Best is to take the unit back into the tech for him or her to check it out.
2. The HVPS PCB has gone bad. If the machine is still under warranty (check for your receipt), don't go any further and just call Brother customer service at 1-877-436-2665. According another user, the part was shipped overnight and a tech came out the afternoon after he called and installed the part within 2 hours.
3. The Engine PCB failure. Replace the Engine PCB assembly. See warranty service recommendation above.
Start with #1 and if that doesn't resolve the issue, move to the next steps. If under warranty, have Brother do the service. If out of warranty, you'll have to examine the costs vs. buying a new machine.
We just bought another Brother printer (an MFC-9460CDN on closeout sale via Best Buy (~$329.99 and free shipping to the house)). Love Brother machines and service. Very robust in general and fairly easy to repair. I just replaced an MFC-8840DN that is more than 10 years old, and still working, though getting worn out.
Hope this helps.

What is no waste toner on mfc-9840cdw
The 9840 uses a WT100CL cartridge for collection of Waste Toner.
If you remove the Drum Unit then the Plastic Sheet (Transfer Belt) like thing the Waste Toner sits underneath this. Lift out the waste toner and replace it or put one in if it is missing.
Put the Transfer Belt and Drum Unit back in. Close the machine and away it goes again.

MFC-9840 printing Yellow/Red/Blue strips in background. Any ideas why?
This is caused mainly by leaving the Corona Wire sliders anywhere other than where the arrows on the slider meets the arrows on the Drum Units. This leaves solid lines of colour down the length of the page (one per colour with the slider in the wrong place) if it is leaving more than the single line on the page it is probably leaking cartridges.
These particular cartridges are known for their ability to leak badly (OEM and Remanufactured cartridges do it). The only option for a leaking cartridge is to replace it and clean out the machine with a lint free cloth preferably a 'Toner Grabber' cloth. If you nee one of the toner grabber cloths then talk to your local cartridge refilling place for one. If they refil toner cartridges there then they probably have them or can suggest a different option.

Printer / Scanner won't scan to pdf
Hello! I had this exact same issue or question, I guess you can call it. And unfortunately, the CD-ROM user guide was a lot more helpful for me than the Book guide. But anyway, to answer your question and anyone else who has this same question ...
What you need to do is locate the ControlCenter3 software on your computer for a little configuration. This automatically installs when you install the printer's complete Pro Suite drivers on your computer.
You might be able to find it somewhere on your start bar (left or right side of the start bar). It's a small blue icon with the acronyms "CC3" on it. Anyway, click to open the software. Once opened, you'll need to make some configurations so that when you scan to file, it'll be "PDF" by default.
So once you have this software open, "right-click" on the circle button that says "File" and choose the option that says "Control Center Configuration". Up pops a dialog box with two tabs - Software Button and Device Button.
Now in order to scan to pdf from your Brother MFC 9840 CDW, you simply need to change the "File Type" in the drop-down box to "PDF" under both tabs. You can optionally also change the "File Name" to a recognizable default file name of your choosing (I chose to change it to say "PDF File") and you can also set your default "Destination Folder" (otherwise your scanned PDF files will automatically be saved in your "Scan" folder). That's it! No need to mess with anything else.
Most importantly, you need to make sure that these exact same configurations are made under both the "Device Button" tab AND the "Software Button" tab as well.
Click "Okay" and now try to re-scan your document as a File. It should automatically scan it as a PDF file to your computer.
I hope this helps solve your problem if you haven't already been able to figure it out.

Wont print. Cant detect paper.
There's a problem with the software in the unit. Brother does no longer offer software updates. You can try and power off the unit, unplug the USb cord from the back of the machine. Wait 1 minute, plug the USB back in and power the unit up. After unit cycles, should be ok. If not, uninstall/reinstall the software///

My brother MFC-J270w will not print - says reload paper
It sounds like you have a stuck optical paper sensor or the light path is being blocked by paper dust or toner. The paper sensor is usually a plastic movable tab that has a portion that interrupts a optical sensor. I'm not sure where it would be located on your unit, but check in the sheet metal work around your paper tray. Sometimes simply loosening it or unplugging and reconnecting the connector to the sensor will be the answer. You may try spraying compressed air around the area to clean out any paper dust or toner. That worked for me. You may wish to wear a dust mask or do this outside to prevent inhaling any paper dust or toner.Other times one will have to replace the optical sensor. I'm sorry I can't be more specific.

Brother MFC-9840CDW wrinkles envelopes. Brother
Problem Solved!
I have a Brother MFC-8480 DN all in one printer, copier, fax and scanner.
I discovered that envelopes wrinkle because users, like me, didn't know that Brothers built in a no-wrinkle, pass through exit for envelopes, labels and thick paper.
Envelopes were never to be printed by inserting them in the front and letting them wrap around a HOT roller and get cooked and wrinkled. The way it works:
An envelope is inserted in the front and goes straight out the back of the printer through an exit door, completely avoiding the hot roll-through mechanism.
Take a look. On the back of the machine is a large pass through exit door. Just snap it open. You will see one blue lever on each side of the opening. Snap them both straight down to the . . .ta da. . ."envelope icons".
Put three envelopes in the front and they will print straight out the back, perfect and wrinkle free. After printing your envelopes, snap the blue levers back up and shut the door. Takes about five seconds to open the door and snap down the blue levers down/up.
Happy envelope printing.
