How to Format Hard Drive With Windows 8 eHow Step 1: Back up all data on the drive you want to format. Tap the "Search" icon on the Windows Start screen and type "format disk" in the Search field. Select "Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions." The Disk Management utility opens. dff89d62-f4c0-4d6e-b10c-7cba410b4b66.pngSelect "Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions." (Image courtesy of Microsoft.) Step 2: Click the drive that you want to format. Note that in most cases "Disk 0" is the drive with the Windows operating system on it. If this is the disk you want to format, you should reinstall Windows instead. 2fe0d696-372b-421f-b49f-da062aabbeec.pngSelect the drive you want formatted. (Image courtesy of Microsoft.) Step 4: Click "Yes" at the warning that all data on the partition will be deleted. After a few seconds, the volume is deleted. The drive is now listed as unallocated in the Disk Management window. d35f80cd-51ea-4d05-8911-98dcebc0c93d.pngDisk Management warns that all data on the partition will be lost. (Image courtesy of Microsoft.) Step 1: Select the drive you are formatting if it isn\'t already selected. Click the "Action" menu, then "All Tasks" and "New Simple Volume." The New Simple Volume Wizard opens. Note that if the disk is part of an array, advanced users will have additional options like creating a new spanned volume, striped volume, mirrored volume or RAID-5 volume. 94a33b72-44e6-461e-9920-f69735d78d0a.pngCreate a New Simple Volume (Image courtesy of Microsoft.) If you are creating only one volume or partition in the drive, this number should be the same as the maximum disk space displayed above. Click "Next." 40a2b160-a7c4-4669-9f7b-9acdec319786.pngSpecify the volume size. (Image courtesy of Microsoft.) Step 4: Select a drive letter that you would prefer the computer to use for this drive. If you don\'t want a letter assigned, click the "Do Not Assign a Drive Letter or Drive Path" option. Advanced users may also prefer to mount the drive in an empty NTFS folder. Click "Next." a7adfda9-4b8d-4ac9-8d3f-f9ffd7313665.pngSpecify a drive letter. (Image courtesy of Microsoft.) Step 5: Select a file system for the volume. Your options are ExFAT or NTFS. Use ExFAT if you\'re going to share files with a Mac computer; otherwise, NTFS is the better choice. Unlike its predecessors, ExFAT can support the same volume sizes as NTFS -- up to 256TB. However, it\'s not as robust as NTFS and doesn\'t support file system-level encryption and built-in compression. Mac computer\'s can\'t write files to an NTFS drive. 9a87dfc0-3bf5-43bc-9c8b-f51801f8795b.pngSelect a file system. (Image courtesy of Microsoft.) Step 6: Select the "Perform a Quick Format" option if the drive doesn\'t contain any private information, or if you\'re using the drive for your personal use. A Quick Format takes only a few seconds, but the data it leaves behind can be easily recovered by anyone with the right software. A full format takes much longer but it does erase every byte of data. Select the "Enable File and Folder Compression" option if desired. Type a name for the volume and click "Next." 3e35ad5c-5391-4201-a130-a49a67a41fd4.pngChange the volume label if desired. (Image courtesy of Microsoft.) Step 7: Click "Finish" after reviewing the settings that were applied to the new volume. If you want to change anything, click the "Back" button and format the drive again. 777198bd-fcb2-4516-b752-36d350d7ca61.pngClose the New Simple Volume Wizard by clicking "Finish." (Image courtesy of Microsoft.) Step 8: Select another drive or volume to format, or exit the Disk Management utility. 9e6a30e3-47da-47f7-a20b-39473c45c3ec.png Read more : http://www.ehow.com/how_6026_format-hard-drive.html Tips & Warnings
  • If you\'re formatting a drive to give to someone else, or if you\'re disposing of a drive that has sensitive information on it, you should always deselect the Quick Format option so Windows can perform a full format. However, even a full format may not make the data completely unrecoverable. The only way to be 100 percent certain that data can\'t be recovered is to destroy the drive.

I ;have formatted the WD external drive and

You should not even try to install an operating system on an external drive. Windows looks at the "C" drive and installs programs to "C" drive. You are trying to put it on the "G" drive. You will have too many problems and wish you never had tried. Buy a larger main drive and partition it with two equal partitions. Then "Dual Boot". You will find how to do this on the internet. Just Google "Dual Booting".

Cannot format my WD 1TB external hard drive

The hard disk is having bad sectors on its first 3000 sectors.the bad sectors are caused by degradation of the platter of the hard disk.OR the factory area of the hard disk has certain files called SMART, G -LIST and other log files.Unless one empties those log files with a good tool , one cant format ones hard disk.

Not detecting, beeping

This is likely a couple problems; 1. The hard drive is dying or is dead. You're looking at hardware recovery if this is the case. There are some tools such as Spinrite that might be able to recover the disk. (GRCHard drive data recovery software) 2. The power supply on the computer/laptop is not functioning as well as it used to. Try using another PC to see if there's any difference in results.

Western digital 2tb my passport keeps flashing; not detected

Remove the drive from the external case it is in and connect directly to your computer - see if the bios recognizes it. If so, the OS will do so also and you can access it. Also means the electronics of the external case are no good. If not recognized in other machine, the hard drive has gone to hard drive heaven and needs to be replaced.

I'm using a western digital external fp with usb. The usb connection is not working.

Hi John, Try to connect it with your friend's system/Laptop. If it works then there is some problem with your system. If you are facing the same problem after testing with your friend's system then try it with the new cable. If the problem remains the same then contact any data recovery experts or system repair experts. they will definitely solve the problem. Thanks
