Laptop very very slow to start up

If you have a virus program installed, it ismost likely is running a scan on your hard disk. It can slow down your computerespecially if you have a large hard drive. To make your computer (hard disk) lean and mean, uninstall any programs you donot use. Also you need to maintain your hard disk by running Disk Cleanup this willremove old temp files and old compressed files etc. This will reduce the number of files the virus scanner has to scan. Plusrun Defrag. this makes your files contiguous so the system can access filesoff the hard drive quicker because it does not work as hard.Disk Cleanup and Defrag should carried out at leastonce a month.

Wifi not working

Why not? What is happening? Is the wireless turned on? Are you connected to the router? Do you know the password if the network is secured? Has the wifi worked before? There are too many variables that could cause the wifi to not work and you gave us no info as to what is happening.Maybe you don't have your wireless turned on. Look onboth sides and in front for the Wireless Switch and turn it on.Also once the wireless switch is turned on there are keystrokes that can togglethe wireless on or off. Normally you would Press and Hold the FN functionkey located at the lower left of the keyboard, then hit the correct F1 thru F12key that toggles the wireless. The correct F1 thru F12 key to hit willhave the wireless signal icon )))) on it. Or it might have the icon of a towerwith the wireless signal icon )))). Normally the screen will displayWireless On or Wireless Off when you toggle the wireless.

Forgot power on pass word

Hi,

This is only possible is you are using Windows XP. If your operating system is windows Xp, follow the steps below:

  1. Turn on your computer and allow it get to the stage where is will ask for user/log pasword
  2. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del your keyboard.
  3. A user name and password prompt will pop up.
  4. On the user name type in "administrator
  5. On the password, type in "administrator"
  6. and you windows will open, go to control panel from there to change the password.
That's all. In other words, the user name and password is administrator.

But in the case of windows Vista, you will have to re-run windows operating system, because vista security is very tight and its difficult to break into its password.

Take care.

Forget my bios password notebook

Removing the RTC battery and leaving it uninstalled for 5 or more minutes causes all passwords and CMOS settings to be cleared. BIOS password can be removed by temporarily disconnecting/ removing the RTC/ CMOS (Coin-cell) battery from the motherboard. Disconnect the coin-cell battery from the system board and it will reset the BIOS to its default setting and the password would be gone.
Please Refer to Page 77 of the REPAIR MANUAL HP 6720S.
If you can't do it yourself, you may seek help from local laptop service professional.

GoodLuck!
Dont forget to appreciate the solution if I could have been of any help!

Hi nonso3d...
You could have two problems with your laptop.
One the lcd is faulty or the lcd lamp is faulty.
To check to see if the lcd is faulty hook you laptop up to a working monitor and turn the computer on...if you can now see the screen on the external monitor...your lcd is bad, if you see nothing then the lamp is faulty and will need to be replaced.
Please take time to rate me 4 thumbs up

Hello, Abdi.

I have some suggestions for you. It's possible that your hard drive is failing. Run Diagnostics and check your hard drive. Upon boot, press F12 rapidly (or could be F2) and choose the Diagnostics.

Another suggestion is to use System Restore, in the event that your operating system file(s) is problematic. Again, boot your system to Safe Mode (press F8 repeatedly when powering on). Go to System Restore and choose a date when your system worked OK. Note: with System Restore, all your updates will roll back to that date. Follow the process.

Hope this helps.

XP installation problem - HP

The hard disk is not detected because this model notebook has a SATA hard drive installed and the XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX.
Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

I have a hp copaq

This is a common problem for most laptops.
With my experience in HP laptops, you can reinstall the touch pad drivers. Visit the HP website and click on the support link, select the model of your laptop under the 'Drivers' section and download the touch pad drivers for your model.

If that does not solve your problem, buy an external USB mouse for your laptop, that is the best alternative solution most people with touch pad problems resort to.

Thank you for using Fixya,

What is the felt strip

HP doesn't list it in their Service Manual. No part number given.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?contentType=SupportManual&lang=en&cc=us&docIndexId=64179&taskId=101&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3442832#3

This link should take you directly to the heading - Service and maintenance information
Click on the first file listed,
HP Compaq 6720s Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide

This is a PDF file. It may take up to 30 seconds before you see the first page come up.
It may also take additional time for the file to fully download.
(The computer you are using has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files)

In the Bookmarks menu to the left, click on the + sign to the left of - Illustrated parts catalog.
Now click on - Computer major components
(You may wish to make the view size smaller. Click on the Zoom Out icon { - } at the top)

This is page 14 in the PDF file page number box. (At the top of the PDF file)
Scroll through to Page 30.
No listing for a separate felt strip.

Haven't worked on one yet. I would be willing to guess that the felt strip is part of the Keyboard, (Page 50)
I don't think it's part of the Switch Cover. (Page 48)

IMHO I would buy a piece of felt with the dimensions and thickness you need, and install it myself.
You now have the Service Manual.
(I suspect some form of rubber cement is used to tack the felt into place)

BEFORE you begin!
Observe Anti-Static Precautions.

Read Page 33 to 35 first.
