get a flashing lock symbol on my keyboard apon turning my laptop on? The lock has a A in it. The laptop won't boot up?
Please help me
See if you can run the Pre-boot System Assessment (PSA) diagnostics. To run the PSA+ Diagnostics on this system, perform one of the following actions:
1) Hold down the <Fn> key while pressing the power button.
2) Turn on the system, press <F12> at the initial Dell™ logo screen, and select “Diagnostics” from the boot menu.
3) Disconnect the AC power and remove the battery. While holding down the power button, insert the AC connector into the back of the system. The system then starts and the message “Diagnostic boot selected” displays. The system then launches the PSA+ Diagnostics.
According to Dell specs, there is no error code listed that you described, (Flashing Caps LED). Also try reseating the memory modules, (you might want to try this first).

I cannot hear any sound from the vostro 1500 built-in speakers. I checked the sound sign and media player indicates that music is playing but I cannot find a way to hear any sound.
I check the driver and it is "OK"
Make sure you dont have the laptop muted. Seems simple, but ive caught myself with a muted computer before. First, check to see if your computer is muted, by looking at the little speaker icon by the clock. if there is no speaker there, go into control panel> sounds and audio devices, and check there. Lastly if you have no sound, check your media player, because the player itself can be muted/turned down as well. I hope that helps

for a dell vostro 1500:
my battery isn't charging! my laptop will still run on AC power and will use whatever power is left on the battery if it's not plugged in, but just refuses to charge. does that mean it's just a bad contact?
If the battery is 2 years old, then buy a replacement battery, see if it charges. Portable batteries are good for roughly 300 to 500 recharge/discharge cycles before they begin to fail roughly 18 months. Dell warrants the Battery for 1 year, so there is no warranty on the battery. If a replacement battery doesn't charge, then the motherboard will need to be replaced. If under warranty, Dell will fix it, if not, motherboards are $100-150 on Ebay.

where is the BIOS Password Clear/Reset jumper located in a Dell Vistro 1000?
There is no Jumper on a Dell Vostro 1000 to clear the password. You will have to contact Dell Technical Support, Complete a ownership validation to confirm you are an authorized user of the system, then they can provide you with a Master Password to clear the password

VOSTRO 1710 BATTERY WON'T CHARGE
If the battery will not charge, try this:
1.) First, power reset the unit by powering it off, unplugging it from AC power, removing the battery, then push and hold the power button on the unit for about 60 seconds.
2.) Next, plug the AC adapter back in (LEAVE THE BATTERY OUT), power the unit on. Does the unit power on?
If yes, Power the unit off and put the battery back in, let it charge overnight. If, after this the battery will still not charge, you will have to replace the battery. Contact the OEM to ensure you get the correct battery.
If no, remove the AC adapter carefully, look inside the DC port (where the charger plugs in to the laptop) you should see a small silver pin. Is this pin missing or bent? If the pin seems to be in good shape, then most likely you will have to replace the AC adapter. If it IS bent or missing, then you will need to contact a laptop repair center.

when the laptop is switched on a lock symbol with a number 9 in it is lit just above the keyboard. Nothing else happens, and a single flashing ">" is displayed onthe scree. Can you help please?
the "9" inside a lock means that your Num Lock button has been pressed. If all you see is the ">" then maybe you are looking at what's called a DOS prompt, and I have no idea why that would display. Try holding the Power Switch for 10 seconds and restart your computer. Hopefully things will be better, and you know where your Num Lock key is.

wds error 193 ocured while loading JAVA VM??
Java Virtual machine has failed to load/install correctly. Just completely uninstall java, then go to http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and choose JAVA OFFLINE for your computer. (the offline is the entire package. thats a more reliable install).
