You may receive an error message when you search for available updates... To resolve this error, examine the Hosts file. (This file may also be named Hosts.sam.) Make sure that the file does not list any static IP entries for the Windows Update Web site or for the Microsoft Update Web site. The Hosts file is located in the C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc folder. To view the Hosts file, you may have to associate the file with Notepad. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the Hosts file.
  2. Click Open With, and then select Notepad from the list of programs.
If the Hosts file contains a static IP address that is associated with Windows Update or with Microsoft Update, comment the entry by adding the # sign at the beginning of the entry. You can also delete the whole line and save changes to the Hosts file. Note Programs, such as Web accelerators, DNS accelerators, DNS caching utilities, and Spyblockers, can add static IP entries for the Windows Update Web site or for the Microsoft Update Web site to your Hosts file. This scenario can cause Windows Update or Microsoft Update to fail.

Windows does not include software to play movie DVDs.
You need to purchase software to perform this task.
I use Corel's WinDVD.

Good luck!

HDMI is the best method as VGA is low density video. You may have to set up the laptop to send data output to the HDMI/VGA port (Out to the TV). Your manual should spell out the procedures to change from Computer Internal Video to Video OUT.

Almost all laptops require a battery be installed for them to power up. Even if the battery no long holds a charge, it still requires a battery to be installed.

Hi There and Welcome to Fixya!

Another way to turn on the wireless radio on your Lenovo Y510 is to press and hold the "Fn" key, then simultaneously press the "F5" key.

This is an alternative way to switch the wireless antenna on or off without using the physical WIFI switch.

Hope this helps,

Thank you for using FixYa.

If its running Windows 8 the login might be linked to a microsoft account. from another computer login or reset your password to that account and try logging back into the laptop (as long as it has an active internet connection) If its windows 7 or older you might need to find a Live repair disk (ERD or Hiron's boot cd or something along those lines that has a password recovery tool incorperated) Worst case you would need the windows installation disk or restore disks that came with the laptop

This information is intended for experienced users. It is not intended for basic users, hackers, or computer thieves. Please do not try any of following procedures if you are not familiar with computer hardware. I'll not be responsible for the use or misuse of this information, including personal injury, loss of data or hardware damage. So use it at your own risk.

A. By Using the Motherboard Jumper:

In most motherboards CMOS battery is soldered, which makes it difficult to remove the battery. In this case we use another method.

Almost all motherboards contain a jumper that can clear all CMOS settings along with the BIOS password. The location of this jumper varies depending upon the motherboard brand. You should read your motherboard manual to check its location. If you don't have the manual then look for the jumpers near the CMOS battery. Most of the manufacturer label the jumper as CLR, CLEAR, CLEAR CMOS, etc.

When you find the jumper, look carefully. There will be 3 pins and the jumper will be joining the center pin to either left or right pin. What you need to do, is remove the jumper and join the center pin to the opposite pin. e.g. if the jumper joins center pin to left pin, then remove it and join center pin to right pin. Now wait for a few seconds and then again remove the jumper and join the center pin to left pin.

Make sure to turn the PC off before opening the cabinet and resetting the jumper.

B. By Using Software:

I have found that BIOS/CMOS Password Recovery Tool is the most effective.:
BIOS/CMOS Password Recovery Tool is a program that works instantly to remove any lost or forgotten BIOS/CMOS password. Simply boot your PC to DOS and execute the program, and get access to forgotten BIOS/CMOS passwords in just seconds

hinges take alot of stress as they have to be quite tight to hold the screen in a certain position, alot of laptops can have over tightened hinges and cause splitting in the housing. Hinges can quite often come loose.
Make sure all screws are present around the hinge area and if you can tighten up your hinges.
If the hinges are badly damage you can buy replacments for a few $ off of ebay

you should contact a lawyer to see if you can start a class action lawsuit. I had a problem with my toshiba laptop, and a few months later, I got a notice of a class action lawsuit, and got a 200 dollar check in the mail for a hinge defect in a laptop I used to own.
