The spu-35/1tb spins up and the lights go on but

One or more of the hints below will probably sort out most USB problems with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port
6. For FLASH DRIVES you should ensure that the device is set for "quick removal" using the drive control panel properties or use the USB "Safely Remove Hardware" option. If you dont do this there is a very strong chance that any files you transfer may not be there when you plug into another computer.

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.
You should also do this to cheack the drives connections are not bad inside the enclosure

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.
Known as "The Click Of Death"

If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.

I have a simpletech 1TB ext. hard drive BOM No.

Hi there,

You need to install the hard drive driver for the PC to recognize it. If you don't have one, just look in the internet for a free driver.

I'm getting an error message

Yes

first lets try fixing the issue.
Hold down the windows key and press R to open the run menu
Or press start -> run

type cmd and press OK or enter.
In the cmd window, (black background) Type CHKDSK /F /X /R G:
Replace the G: with the correct drive letter, to find the correct drive letter open my computer from either desktop or from start menu, find your drive and see the drive letter in front of it, for example if the letter is H you would write the following

CHKDSK /F /X /R H: (press enter)

The scan will take a while.

After the scan is complete try opening your documents again.

If you are still unable to get to your files
I recommend file scavenger data recovery software
http://www.quetek.com/prod02.htm

Been using it for few years now myself.
Download the demo of the program and scan the drive with it and see if it is able to find your files, if it does find your files you can consider buying the program to restore all your files from the drive.

after all the important files are backed up into your computer, you need to format the external drive to get it back to use, right click on the drive and select format.

I am not computer literate so I have this bonzia xpress

It's a device known as a USB Flash Drive.

They are portable storage devices you can use to take files with you from place to place.

If you copy your documents to the flash drive, when you plug the flash drive in of a different computer, the files will be available to you on that system.

For example, I could take pictures of my trip to the Grand Canyon, copy them to a flash drive, then mail the flash drive to you and you would be able to see all of my pictures after you've inserted the flash drive into your pc.

To access the flash drive, insert it into you pc then double click on the my computer icon and you will see a drive letter assigned to the flash drive. The drive letter is "usually" F.

Hi, I'm trying to do a backup of my photos, documents and music, but am unable to locate those itmes on the C Drive.Any suggestions?

you can use the windows search option to be able to find those files, but that will take a long time. you can use a backup drive or a backup software, they are almost reliable. if the files are important, then i would recommend taking a backup with the help of a technician. My external drive will not open on my new HP computer

Unplug the external. Then Try rebooting cold. When the computer stops +30 sec. Reboot the computer and plug the external when you see the HP splash screen.
  • If that does not work, make sure you have the drivers for the ext. for your configuration. Win 8, 8.1?
  • You can go to the site where your external was developed at and make sure you have latest drivers and if there is a problem associated with your device.
  • On newer machines there is also 3.0 USB connections. While it should not make any major difference, make sure that your ext. is not plugged into a 3.0 USB. The 3.0 USB is blue in color.

Can SimpleTech runs on 220 voltage

Not enough info..... Ask Simpletech. I Dont use simple tech brand but it usually is similar to other products. Most Hard Drive Boxes are connected to a Power Pak that goes into the AC wall outlet to drop the power down to low DC voltage. Most power pak's handle 110 & 220 ac these days. Read the tiny writing on the power pak label. It's usually marked as input & output. Good Luck
