I don't know where you live - so I don't know who nearby can work on it. Regardless, my suggestion is to return it to Garmin and let them handle it. Since your nuvi 760 is out of warranty, Garmin will charge $99 to "factory overhaul" it. What this means really is, you will get a factory rebuilt nuvi 760. Garmin will not fix yours and return it to you - but rather they will send one that that belonged to someone else that they refurbished. This means really fast "turn around" instead of waiting for yours to be fixed. In short, you will not get the same one you sent in. The refurbished unit will come with the latest up - to - date maps and have a 90 day factory warranty.

Check out Garmin's page to learn more about this overhaul service and to take advantage of it. If you do send it in - your data will be lost. Garmin will erase all your personal data, photos, etc. from the nuvi (and they won't put it on the replacement) - so if there's anything on it that you want - be sure to copy it before sending in.

Yes you do have to remove the North America map, I was just checking on the specs and they do not list that it supports a memory card so unfortunately due to the lack of available space on the solid state drive that comes built into this unit you will have to do the map switchover.

connect it up to the pc and open mapsource and tell it to download the voice files for you

Could be many issues, you could have affected the LCD display by accidently pulling the flex cable out of its socket. Without seeing the unit its very hard to say. If it worked before you took it part, then you have probably affected something.

Hello,

have you tried using any other power sources to try to power it on? If no other cables will work the units cradle may be dead. If you could find one to try that would be ideal otherwise you will most likely have to replace the power cradle it is a quite common issue that they break.

Goto menu and information and maps.
it will tell you the map version, though map date is about a year ahead of real date.
if it says 2010 it could be a 2009 map.

Replacing the nuvi 760's battery is actually not all that hard as this video demonstrates:
The company that produced the video sells a kit which includes the battery and tools necessary to do this yourself if you'd like. His nuvi 760 is back up and running smoothly.

It can be charged from a computer. Connect it to your computer with the mini USB lead and it will charge. It takes about 8 hours compared to 4 hours with the car charger or with a mains charger.

If your car charger isn't working it's likely that the fuse is blown. I presume you checked the cigarette lighter socket first and that it's working. If not try something else in the socket and make sure that's not the problem.

At the end of the charger lead plug, that goes in the cigarette lighter socket, there's a ring. Unscrew the ring and the plug comes apart. Be careful not to lose the silver tip. When the plug comes apart you'll see the fuse. You'll get a replacement in any car electrics shop or anywhere that supplies satnavs. I hope this solves your problem.

Mine is doing the same thing. My Garmin is just about 1 year old now. Wonder if the battery is bad, although I plug it into the power port on my truck only when I'm going to use it.

If you want to reset your unit, here are a couple of steps you can do:

1. If the unit is hung, slide the power switch and hold for 5 or more seconds until the unit resets. Note: when you slide the power switch to on and continua to hold it, you will briefly see the Garmin screen and then it will disappear on you while you are holding it for more than 5 seconds. This is a normal behavior and it is ok. Now just simply slide the power switch back on.

2. If you want to reset everything that you have had on your unit back to factory settings, meaning all user data, press and hold the lower right corner of the screen and then power the unit on, a dialog will come up asking if you want to "Do you really want to erase all user data", select yes. This option only erases data in the unit's memory that isn't accessible to the user (ie. what isn't accessible when you connect the unit to your computer). It doesn't erase any .gpi or .gpx files you loaded (if your .gpx files contain any waypoints then they will automatically be imported into your Favorites), it won't erase any mp3's, jpg's or any other files that you have loaded.

3. At the main menu of Garmin Nuvi, press Tools, Settings, System, and Restore. A dialog will come up asking if you want to "Are you sure you want to restore the default settings?", select yes.

You've got your GPS damage partly i.e FM transmitter. You can check yourself the circuit by opening back cover. Carefully do visual check to verdict which component is broken. A broken part will leave stain mark on part or PCB. The result will be better if you able to use electronic multitester/AVO meter.
A repair shop should be the last option if you can not fix the problem.

go to Tool.... Settings..... Language.... under Voice select one that has ( TTS ) text to speech ending

The model number or you mean Serial number, that is located on the bottom of unit where it connects to the cradle it will say Nuvi 760 and serial number to the right of it

It should be the Silver tip end of plug the round black circle should unscrew

ok a few things to figure out here, Sound..you cant hear any street names, or music

If its street names you must chose a language that has an ending ( TTS ) text to speech

do that by going to Tools.... Settings... Language... under Voice pick one with an ending ( TTS )

next we will try any other sound... is it muted? on main screen press Volume Icon

doe sit have a checkmark in MUTE? if so remove it

If not then on that screen there is FM Trans on bottom of screen .... press it

Enable FM Transmitter if it has a checkmark remove it...... place a checkmark there if you want to hear your unit thru your car speakers

I have never even heard of this working on a gps unit. Not a bad idea though ;-]

I've never seen any option that would allow you to do this. The files that you can download are map files and saved poi's. I haven't seen the ability to read anything else. The display and such would be able to easily handle it but the software to read a ebook file would have to be loaded into the operating system.

I use a palm to read my ebooks. You can get one of those fairly inexpensively. I have a Lifedrive so I can not only read ebooks but watch movies and listen to music as well as just about everything else I do on my laptop.

If the Touch Screen is not working properly, Calibrate the touch screen..

Turn he unit off then on.... Slide Power Key to the right ( lock )

Hold finger on screen for about 30 seconds until calibration screen appears... for on screen instructions

Go to Tools.....Settings....Language.... under Voice make sure Language with ( TTS ) is chosen

If that is ok then look at this...

Press Volume Icon.... if a checkmark in Mute remove it

if no checkmark then on the bottom of the screen you will see FM TRANS press
Does Enable FM Transmitter have a check mark? if so remove it and check sound
