What is write protected in memory card

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

300 dpi nikon coolpix s51

DPI (dots per inch) is an output parameter and has absolutely no meaning to the camera. It has meaning only when you output the photo to a printer or screen. Let's say you took a photo that's 3000 pixels on the long side. If you then make a 4x6 print, you're putting 3000 pixels into six inches so you're printing at 500 dpi. If you make an 8x10 print, you're putting 3000 pixels into ten inches so you're printing at 300 dpi. Either way, you're printing the exact same picture, only at different dpi settings. The camera has to put something into the dpi field, so it defaults to 72 which is often used for computer screens. Just about any program you use to print your photos can change this number without affecting anything else.

My nikon s51 will not turn on when I plug the transfer cable into the camera

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Nikon Transfer or Picasa.

"this card cannot be used"

First, go into the camera menu and find "reset"...follow the on-screen instructions. Then, download any pictures on the card using a card reader if necessary and then format the card in the camera.

WHEN I TURN ON MY COOL PIX S51 A LENS ERROR

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair centre for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance. Also, please be so kind to let me know if you found this helpful.

Nikon COOLPIX S51 Digital Camera Charge usb

The S51 does not charge via the USB. Connecting the camera to a computer merely drains the battery faster, since the camera has to expend power communicating with the computer (even if it's only to say it has nothing to say).

The S51 comes with an MH-62 charger, which plugs into a wall outlet. This allows you to charge one EN-EL8 battery while using another in the camera.

If you need a charger, you can order one from Nikon at
http://shop.nikonusa.com/store/nikonusa/en_US/pd/productID.213504000
or a third-party one for about half the price at
http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Dolica-Nikon-MH62-Charger/3540124/product.html

Keeps telling me the memory card is write

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". Some include trying to use of a 4GB SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Others include problems with the tiny slide switch on the side of the card, or the electrical contact switch internal to the camera. The problem may also arise from simple formatting problems if the card has never been formatted in the camera (note that this will also erase the card). Troubleshooting tips for this problem may be found at this link.
