Don't waste time trying to fix this, it's faulty.

Return it for exchange or refund. Do not attempt to fix this yourself as it will invalidate any warranty and any right to an refund/exchange.

Please report back if there's any real reason you cannot take this option.

There's a small tab on the side of the card that enables the write-protect feature, it makes the card read-only. Slide the tab in the other direction, and you should be all set!

If its just the memory card, you can stick it into the computer (if you have built in card reader) then go to your menu on the desktop, open computer, find the card which will usually be listed on the bottom of everything else, double click on it, and select all the files you don't want anymore and delete. If you dont have a built in card reader, you can buy them really cheap at Wal-Mart. Hope any of this helps and good luck.

Try this. Aim the camera at the person/object you want to take a picture of. Press the shutter button "HALF WAY DOWN" wait 2 seconds then complete by pressing all the way down to take the picture. The auto focus works on the "half way down" stroke. Some cameras have a light that goes from red to green to let you know the focus was completed. Or, just wait the 2 or so seconds.

This sounds like an internal problem with the CCD. How long have you owned the camera?

The problem you are describing is a problem with one of the chips in the camera that controls image processing. It seems to have failed and needs to be replaced. Following are the instructions to send your camera to Olympus for service.

Chanches are the lens received impact damage or there is some dirt, liquid like pop that is blocking your lens from moving. Try moving the lens and see if this will dislodge the lens. View the lens from top and sides, if it is sitting on an angle it has received impact damage.

Go into the menu of your camera, you should be able to change the brightness of your screen.

There could be two things causing this problem.

1- some dirt somehow got on the outside of side of the lense. So the lense could not fully retract or open out. As a result you can not take any picture. If the lense comes out even a little bit, try to pull it out NOT too hard a few times. If it does not retract, turn the camera off and push the lense in (up and down) NOT too hard for a few times. If the camera opened up 100% or retracted 100%, your camera should be back to normal. Make sure to clean the outside of the lense when fully open and keep it clean always. If this did not help, read 2.

2- If you dropped the camera, some mechanical part of the lense is broken or dislocated or the cable may have come loose. In this case you need to take out the lense from the camera and inspect it for broken pieces or loose cable. clean the outside of the lense and push the lense in and out a few times. Put the lense back on the camera and your camera would be back to normal.

I would suggest you to load your xD card on another multi card reader to isolate the possible problem. You may have a good chance to retrieve your pictures.

Some card readers come in with free photo recovery software. For example the TS-RDP8R (13 in 1) could get the job done for $15.
