coleman roof a/c units compressor not coming on

I recently purchased 2 older coleman roof a/c units. It seem neither ones compressor comes on to provide cold air. Fan motor work fine but when I set the fan speed selector to A/C low or high speed and adjust the temperature selector up or down, the compressor does not come on. What can I do to troubleshoot these units. Could you please lay it out in a step wise format (i.e. check this first and how, then check this and how, etc.). I am a jack of most trades and a master of none, but I am willing to try and most importantly, eager to learn. Thanks, Shawn

Motor1258,
Thanks for the response, to be more specific, the nine pin connector was damaged, but I was able to connect the wires back to main unit panel. I am ready to hook to the hunter thermostat and do not know which wires to connect to. This is my problem and I do not want to short something out. Hope this helps, I want to get it installed again. Thanks again for caring....Jerry

My coleman rv ac unit

My coleman rv ac unit is dripping condensation inside the camper, what is causing that?

It is possible that the drain hole on condensate pan is plugged and causing water to over flow pan. Remove cover from unit and check drain line.Clean coils andpan as best you can and clear drain hole. Add a small amount of bleach to water in drain pan. This will kill any algea or bacteria that may be growing in condensate water and plugging the drain. Thank you

RV ac fan runs backwards (blows out air on top of

RV ac fan runs backwards (blows out air on top of RV.) Runs correctly sometimes but after it satisfies and clicks off when it kicks back on, it runs backwards. The only thing that will turn it back around is to turn off unit and wait for around 30 minutes and turn back on. (won't reverse motion very quickly) Spoke to Coleman expert and was told it is the fan capacitor. Need instructions to identify and change the capacitor. Would like to fix myself since this will be the 3rd time to have it in the shop and it hasn't gotten fixed yet. Already had the control panel changed and it didn't fix the problem. Most mechanics don't have a clue what the problem is and say never heard of this problem before. It is on a 2004 Wilderness Advantage 5th wheel. Help!!!

Hi, this is strange as I have never heard of this either!!! The capacitor is located by the motor and sometimes clamped to the motor. They can be the shape of a very small can, oval 3" tall with 2 leads on top with wires coming off the terminals. It could be chrome in color, or made of hard plastic. It may have 3 terminals on top, with several spade connectors on it.When you find it, mark all wires and draw a picture or you will not remember how it hooked up.Try and get the same one. Keep me posted and I can help if you need more. Strange thing going on here??

thermostat

I have a RV with a coleman unit, unit run fine, but the thermostat blows the 2.5 amp fuse, I change to a 5. amp and it still blow the fuse, it will run for two day some time a week before it blows it out. What can I do.

Several things cause fuses to go. But you ace in the hole is that it works for sometime before it goes out. This suggests that a relay or contactor is not pulling in as it should. I would try replacing the fan relay (if so equipped) and definitely the compressor contactor. If either of these try to pull in and are off center internally the result can be blown fuses intermittently.

DO NOT GO ABOVE 5 amp fuse or you may burn out the transformer.
The other things that can cause a blown fuse intermittently where your describing (although less likely unless subject to rodents and or high or low voltage spikes)
1 a temporary short in the control wiring (wire to or from the thermostat).
2 A short intermittent on the control board (if so equipped)
3 A relay on the control board or the SS circuitry is not operating with in design parameters.

I would really like to know what you discover the problem is.

If this helped you understand your system or problem please rate me as high as you can and thank you for using fix ya. Good Luck.

You can check with a multimeter that has a micro Farad checker you can read on the cap what the mF is and what the range will be plus or minus a certain percent. You can change it just remember how you took the wires off. example 80mf cap plus or minus 10 percent would be72-80 would be good cap.

Our AC did this and needed bearings replaced. Cost $10 dollars to fix it. Husband did the work. Took him less than an hour to replace the bearings.
