Unfortunately you will have to buy an external cd/dvd drive simply because windows xp has no built in recovery partitions you will need the recovery cds to perform a factory recovery.

if nothing was showing up on the screen I would have checked the Video card first as its one of the simplest things to check but you need to borrow someone elses.
The light would be on cause the BIOS is looking for a hard drive. If you connect speakers or headphones see if you can hear windows booting up if there is something installed on it. If you can hear windows starting up good! its probably your video card. If nothing then your motherboard might be the culprit.

I also look for discussion groups and forums since they ofen have links posted inside that I may find interesting. Also check the website of the makers of your PC, Mother Board or whatever you want to know about.

Please dont connect a cable modem to an internal modem.
These are not the same types of device.
you need to connect from the cable modem to the ETHERNET port.
They look similar but ethernet is slightly larger.
Dont use a telephone cord for the ethernet connection it is the wrong one.
