A modern tv is as much computer as tv and so contains much circuitry that is ultra-sensitive to voltage surges and spikes that often accompany power outages or electrical storms (nearby or distant).

Repair costs can sometimes be met by the power company or your domestic insurer...

Usually the flashing red light would be transmitting a blink code that would at least provide a strong clue to the nature/location of the fault.

The symptom you report seems to be fairly common and a quick search produced others searching for the meaning of the blink code but I saw no firm answers.

As the logo appears on screen, albeit briefly, it would suggest there is power and a good screen. A common design of the modern tv is the screen remaining black unless there is a signal to display, even self-generated signals such as menus, so perhaps the source of the problem is a fault that is preventing signal from reaching the video amplifier and scan section.

I have read during my search of people trying to fix the problem themselves and ended up spending the cost of a cheap tv and it still not working. As you are on a tight budget you need better value than that and that means a professional repair from somebody with experience, test gear and access to service manuals.

The tv that I have is an LG 42LB5600-UZ, but that wasn't one of the choices. The problem is that the television turns on... has a picture and sound, and then in about 30 seconds, the screen goes black but the sound continues. It is the same on every channel. It worked fine last night, but not today.

If the Menu is displayed on the TV screen properly but the picture is still upside down, the problem might be due to an external device, such as a digital set top box or a transmission issue. Please check with your Manufacturer for the external device. The problem could have also been caused due to a signal issue. You could have a person that repairs TV's to take a look at your TV and see if there is a way to fix the screen being upside on the TV.
