Brother has had a problem with this model and several similar ones not printing black. If it's still in it's one-year warranty, find a service center here, and Brother will pay the servicer for everything. If it's just out of warranty, call Brother and beg for them to issue a Service Request, which is like an extension of the warranty for this one situation. They'll replace your printhead and all ink cartridges. (It may still come back low on ink, because it uses a bunch of ink purging air and old ink from the tubes & head after the repair.

But before all that, try several cleaning cycles, and make sure you have genuine Brother ink in the machine. Brother won't pay for a repair on this unless it has their own ink in it.

If it's long out of warranty, it can still be repaired, but will probably cost more than a new machine.

The other fax machines are not on the same line though, right? Try installing a line filter.

hi karn..you need to disasemble your printer and clean your Maintenance unit....the coz of this error 51 is usually you are using competetor ink and then you have reset the counter (error 46) ,after you reset it, you need to change ink absorber if not it will bank those waste ink in the ink absorber and after it is full the waste ink have no place to store and it will jam the mantenance unit and the worse case it the ink maybe spoil other part of the printer go and find engineer  asap if not you need to replace new unit....

It's all a scam. I have the same problem and I called Brother and they told me that the machine uses color ink to clean itself. It costs more to replace these color cartridges then to buy a new one, which is what I'm going to do. Buy a black and white from a different company. It's all a scam to get you to spend money on their color ink that you don't use.

please try to uninstall aagn the ink cartridge and check very carefully if you inserted it in his proper position.

after that try to turn it off your printer after 5 mins turn it on again.

the purge unit is not functioning properly. it is a part of the machine that caps up your print head when not in use. it is not moving out of the way of the carrier for it to move properly.

turn on the machine, open the top cover . Unplug the machine. move the carrier to the left. Look to the right under the cover where the carrier goes back & fourth, see if any paper or fourn objict is in the area where the carrier sleeps. hope you fines somthing.

Question edited for clarity. 985 or 895? Usually because the jam hasn't been cleared or the machine hasn't been reset. Remove the paper tray an open the cartridge bay. Open the rear paper door, check underneath. This machine has a lot of paper scraps in it. :>D
