I have the yellow altima

If it smells hot, then there's a strain on the motor no doubt about it. Check the suction channel behind the sole plate and remove all of the hoses to check for a clog. It could well be that there is a clog inside the machine after the dust channel from the beater bar and before the main hose assembly goes into the bin. Usually a wire brush or just a blunt stick can remove clogs but please be gentle.
Belt replacement on the Altimas occur on top of the hood, look for crosshead screws on the left hand side and then possibly on the other side where the pedal release is. Also there may be two crosshead screws on the front where the top of the beater bar housing is on either side.

Hight adjustor does not work...

I think we got this figured out . . . . the height adjustment doesn't work when the vacuum is UPRIGHT, but when you disengage and lower the handle the plastic that is blocking the wheels from receding will rotate and then it can receive the plastic on the "top" of the wheel assembly. Try it and I think you will find that it works. I thought it was the wheels that were keeping the vacuum from working well, but that's not the case. Still don't know why it's gone to heck in 9 months.

Eureka Altima

The dust cup has a small gray tray that appears to be part of the cup, but is not. I made the same mistake also and almost broke the stupid thing trying to get it out. Simply push the lock to the left to unlock. Gently lift the dust cup and not the gray tray and the cup will slide out easily.

Not picking up at all...burning smell..belt seems fine.

its one of 2 things, either your hose is blocked or you need a new belt, they do stretch over time. possibly the brushbar needs replacing too.

What type of belt

The replacement from Eureka will work for certain, but any brand of belt that indicates it can be used on that vacuum will work.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Hose is clogged, can't remove hose.

hello,i have a 2996AVS,i have worked on many vacuums like this,if you look down on the top cover where the wheel height knob is,on the far left & far right side's there is a chrome phillips head screw on each side, remove these two screws, the top cover will lift off, just pull up on the back part of the cover and it will lift off, then you can see where the hose attaches, there is a small slot where the hose clips in,use a small flat head screwdriver or pocket knife and insert it in the slot, there is a raised lip on the hose you can see, slide the driver in the slot right on top of this raised lip and slide the small screw driver in until it is under the slot, this will pry up the slot and you can pull out the hose from there,on the rear of vacuum there is a clear plastic attaching cup that locks the hose to the unit, just squeeze the two clips together and pull and this section will come off, then you can clean out end to end of hose, just line them up and push them back in when your done, then reinstall top cover and tighten screws, also check your belt why you have the cover off,it it ffeel's loose or hardened,or slick and shiny on inside of belt, this will cause thr roller brush to slow down or stop ,hope this helps you. r.man

Vacuum plugged in but not on, smoke started coming from the motor

The motor winding burned out. Perhaps the motor was very hot when the vac was turned off after the last use and the insulation of the motor windings broke down when the air stopped moving thought the unit. Perhaps also the polarity of the receptacle it was plugged into is reversed or the plug on the vacuum is not polarized. Those things in combination could cause this but this is kind of a long shot guess. In any case the blower motor is likely burned out and will need to be replaced and checked out.

I HAVE A EUREKA ALTIMA

The hood will come off if you loosen two screws at the front on top of the hood by the brush bar bit that is slightly raised. Then there's a screw to the left hand side of the upright either below the hose or duster area. Once all screws are undone, the hood should pop off.

Eureka Altima Bagless Upright Brush is not spinning

You probably just have a broken belt. The belt needs to be changed about every 6 months regardless. I believe yours takes a style EXT U(Extended life upright), or a regular Eureka "U" belt works fine too.

Dirt does not go in the dustdup

Take off the front top filter (the clear plastic peice where it says eureka) there should be two filters inside, the bit of foam and the peice it's attached to.

I clean both parts in warm soapy water and let dry, that always fixes the problem for me.

Uereka altima model 2991 - on/off swithc stopped working.

If you feel crafty and have a piece of electric cable you can ty bypassing the switch and see if the motor is really dead. You really cannot diagnose that over the phone with out checking the power cord and switch first. SO i would say that giving it a try would be all you can do. Or if you have a volt meter you can check it too.
