Make sure DigiKam, usbmount, and usbview are installed.  Set the camera usb mode settings to PC (PTP).  Plug the usb to camera cable into the back of the PC.  Now with the camera off plug in the cable into the camera. Turn on the camera and the Linux PC should pick up the camera as a usb memory device. Know you can transfer the photos to your PC.

It is generally known that on a white screen no pictures can be seen. But why are you telling this in this forum?

Do the pictures have the same line when viewing them on a PC or other device? If so, great chance your camera sensor or the connection to is is dammaged. If you only see it on the display, the display is dammaged, but you still can us the camera to shoot pictures.

When looking at the memory card from the top, the right side (the side with the beveled corner) must be notched.On the left side, there may be a write-protection notch. This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or, despite what said first, you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

If you have recently dropped the camera or exposed it to excessive dust/sand or dirt the shutters guide tracks may be jammed and unable to move. I would advice taking it to a camera repair shop, and to avoid opening the camera on your own as it may cause further damage/voiding of warranty.

In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue.
