What does write protect mean?

"Write Protect" means that something is locked and your device (camera) cannot "write" to it's storage area.
What type of "storage media" are you using?
For example:  the camera's internal memory, a CompactFlash card, a Memory Stick, an "xD-Picture Card" (micro, mini or regular sized), or a Secure Digital/MultiMediaCard.
[Did you put something  (a small plastic card of some sort) into a slot on the camera before or after turning it on?
Those little cards usually have a tiny button (also called a switch or lever) on them that will move back and forth to lock (write protect) or unlock it. This sounds like the memory card inside your camera is locked or "Write Protected.

To fix this simply take it out, closely examine the memory for the button- the button will be closer to the word "lock" or "protect" and all you need to do is gently slide it in the opposite direction from where it currently is. Put it back into the camera and see if it still says "Write Protect."

GE A730 Digital Camera

Make sure DigiKam, usbmount, and usbview are installed.  Set the camera usb mode settings to PC (PTP).  Plug the usb to camera cable into the back of the PC.  Now with the camera off plug in the cable into the camera. Turn on the camera and the Linux PC should pick up the camera as a usb memory device. Know you can transfer the photos to your PC.

It seems to be locked , it say's WRITE PROJECT with a picture of a little key inside a memory card

Take your memory card out of your camera and look at it. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

GE ASPERIC 12.1 WRITE PROTECT

When looking at the memory card from the top, the right side (the side with the beveled corner) must be notched. On the left side, there may be a write-protection notch. If the notch is omitted, the card can be read and written. If the card is notched, it is read-only, except that the notch may be partly covered by a sliding tab. In this case, the user can slide the tab upward (toward the contacts) to declare the card read/write, or downward to declare it read-only.Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_DigitalRef: http://www.general-imaging.com/uploadedFiles/10_Our_Cameras/Cameras/Smart_Series/A730-Manual.pdf

I have a GE digital A1235, I misplaced or lost the installation CD, How can I get another CD so I can download my pictures? I have a new computer.

You don't need any special software. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or, despite what said first, you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.
