Does this happen with any disc or a disc? Playing a contaminated disc can cause heads to get dirty causing above results. Make sure discs are clean when inserted. (Young children can handle discs improperly and get fingerprints and other stuff on discs, resulting in dirty DVD heads) Purchase and use a DVD head cleaning disc. May have to use it a few times initially. Then make sure disc is clean before inserting. Wiping gently with paper towel dampened with water or vodka generally works to remove contaminants. Wipe only the bottom, not the top until it appears shiny.

I would say the easiest way is to buy an inexpensive universal remote. Keep the receipt in case it does not work. If the remote does not work with the system then simply return it, and try another. Although this might seem like a headache it can be better then sitting up all night trying codes that will never work for the DVD Player you have. I have been through this frustration before. I had the same problem with mine, if you haven't solved it by now, you need to do press these buttons in this exact sequence:
1) select radio
2) press "Band" to change from AM or FM to FM2
3) press preset #5
4) press volume down twice
5) press volume up twice
The screen should then display something along the lines of "the CD eject lockout has been disabled" and your eject button should then with properly

Just a stab in the dark: unplug the player for about 30 seconds, re-insert the plug and turn on, and see if that works for you. As I recall, the update involved creating a CD (or was it a DVD) with the updating firmware, and inserting that in the player and re-starting (but holding down any "magic" key combination?? So long ago that I really forget).

Normally these are reset by pulling out the AC from the mains for about 30 seconds and then re-inserting the AC mains. With some models, hold down the power button while re-inserting the AC mains. Some models also have a reset command in their setup menu. If the unit will not reset this could be a fault with the micro-controller area.

What remote are you using? Need more information. If you're using your TV remote etc - press and hold the power button whilst pressing '1' then see if it turns on/off. Repeat this all the way to ''20'' . If you are using a generic universal remote I need to know which one so I can help you further.
