The problem is in the laser pickup assembly, overtime the laser becomes weaker until it can no longer read the disc. Unfortunately the only option is to replace the DVD player, because the cost to repair will greatly exceed the price of a new one.

This happens when the reading head is covered in dust - it blocks the laser beam so the sensor is no longer detecting its reflection on the disk.
Clean the lens gently with a q-tip and wipe everything in the disk case with one of those monitor wipes. If there is a lot of dust in there blew it away with a can of compressed air first.

Question edited for clarity, full 'make model (what it is)'. This is an Amazon, eBay, Newegg, Overstock special and basically a device without a maker. There is a South African minerals company that share the same name but no Mintek maker of electronics. The only option would be to take it to a computer or electronics repair shop locally and see if they can diagnose. If it has the RCA (Red,White,Yellow) ports you will have to use those. In that case if you are using something like a DVD player that only has HDMI output you will need a special cable that goes from RCA to HDMI. Here is a quick link for you to reference.
