Hi and welcome to FixYa,
Initially, the post / description "...
starting to spin up..." is significant as it eliminates 1 of the 3 most likely suspects for the described concern, the spindle motor (
least likely then).
Offhand, the 2nd common cause of this fault would be the traverse motor / assy (
likely). The traverse motor is responsible for sliding the carriage from the near center towards the disc edge. The carriage is the holder of the laser lens plus its electronics that slides along rails driven by a (
worm) gearing system turned by the traverse motor.
Alternately, the laser itself (
most likely) if unable to read the data from the disc would trigger the spindle motor to stop spinning. Read failure could be caused by dirt, dust, smudged lens cap (
glass) or simply burned itself up.
Options then are:
- consider a DIY (do-it-yourself) repair if and only if very familiar with electronic components & circuitry, use of a DVM/VOM, a soldering iron/station and safe working practices with electrically powered devices. Access to a Service Manual or at the very least, a schematic diagram would be a necessity;
- should you be uncomfortable with a DIY, perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of an authorized Service Center (specially if still under some form of extended warranty) or a qualified professional.
- evaluate other options considering age of unit, parts availability, cost of repair, shipping, downtime and comparative prices of newer / better models. There would be instances where repair is no longer economically viable. Not the answer you were hoping for, Sorry.
If a DIY is being considered, the following maybe of help:
- spindle motor failures are often the small bearings between the motor and the rubber support for the disc. A controlled spray of WD40 maybe of help;
- traverse motor failures are often gummed or dried-up lubricant, accumulated dust, hair, fiber and others. Again, WD40 maybe used to soften the old lubricant. Foreign matter maybe removed using a can of compressed air;
- laser lens maybe cleaned using DVD cleaner or manually using foam swab and alcohol. Keep in mind that even a speck of dust or slight smudge would alter/block the optics.
Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.
