How do I view the files in my LaCie backup folder?

It appears you have an external hard drive. It should connect to your computer with a USB cable. Make sure the external hard drive is turned on and running before you connect the usb cable to the computer. Some external hard drives have an on/off switch and some do not. you can hear it running if you put your ear close to the case.

When you plug it in, wait a few minutes and the computer should indicate that it has recognized it. (sometimes this does not happen) In any case, after a few minutes, open My Computer (Computer, in Windows 7) (sometimes referred to as Explorer- NOT to be confused with Windows Explorer which is an internet browser). You should see a list of recognized drives including your external hard drive. Doubler click on it and you should be able to see your files.

If it doesn't show in Explorer, the computer might be trying to assign a drive letter to it that is already taken. To fix that, go to Control panel, Administrator Tools, Computer management, Disk Management. You should see your external drive listed and you can assign an unused drive designation to it there. You should then be able to go back to Explorer and see it. You might have to refresh the Explorer screen.

USB cable has broken of the plastic.

If the cable is not permanently attached to your drive, you can easily replace the cable for very little money. I am not sure about in Norway, but right here in the U.S., we can run down to Big Lots to buy a new cable for like $4.00. But be sure you get the right cable. The are four different kind of USB connectors commonly used for PC accessories.

Hi I have a Lacie External Harddrive 500gb, when I

The disk was probably dropped or jolted. You can consider the drive bad now. The arm is broken inside. You can format the drive but most likely it won't work after that. Getting the data retrieved can cost up to $2500-$5000.

My lacie hard drive only

Try first connecting the drive to a different USB port and if possible try it on a different computer, but if still not working if possible try using a different USB cable so we can check if this is only a problem with the cable...

What is a portable USB (2.0) hard drive ???

First of all, USB is an interface, that can be used for various computer peripherals, like a mouse, keyboard, printer, storage devices etc. Additionally, the USB interface is able to deliver some power (5V 500mA), which is quite enough for many devices. USB 2.0 is the newer, faster version of the original USB 1.1 specification.
Now for USB storage. Basically there are two types on the market. First are Flash (solid-state devices), usually in form of a "dongle" (called pendrive, stick). They store information in semiconductor memory. Second are hard disks, just like the ones installed in desktop and laptop computers - they store information on magnetic media.
Hard disks in a small enclosure, equipped with special interface, that enables them to be connected via the USB interface, are "portable USB hard drives". Many of them can be powered from the USB socket alone, some need an additional power supply.
With today's technology, hard disks can have 10-20 times larger capacity than flash devices, so they are still indispensable when you want to store a lot of big files (like pictures, movies etc), or back up the contents of your computer's hard drive as a safety copy.

My Icon for my Lacie Harddrive is not coming up on

Hello

If you are using a windows operating system, and you are certain that the drive powers up and spin, here is something you can try, it worked for me.

Go to:
Start
Control Panel
Administrative tools
Computer Management
Storage
Disc Management

Now you should see your drive in the schematic below, right click on it and choose to assign new drive letter and paths. If there is no drive letter assigned to the drive, assign on, otherwise just choose the option to change the drive letter.

Hope this can help you.

Kind regards
Andrea

I have a Lacie external HD 500G which we installed

Kevin, Yes you will loose al data if you format it.DO NOT FORMAT as you have your data on it. What I suggest is to get the motherboard of same old model that you replaced. Sometimes the motherboards do not play up with all the hardware. Get the same model motherboard that you replaced. Once that works, copy all data to some other HDD. Or better still send the data in bits by email to yourself. The data would be safe on the email server. And can be retrieved later when all is well. OR attach the drive to some other computer where it works and send emails to yourself. Long and tedious job, but will save your data. And when the drive has started working with your new computer after formatting or otherwise, you can retrieve all the data. and delete the emails from the server.

USB Connection problems

it definitely is an incompatibility issue. but, it is not the hard drive. vista and win.7 have unseen so called built in driver issues. that m.s. have not been able to repair.
if you are running win.7 make sure that you get all of the latest updates.. xp was by far so far the best o.s. they have come out with yet. vista and 7 really slows down a pc so what does that tell you.. and adding drivers might be the solution. check with the h.d. manufacturer onlin to see if they have any fixes for this problem....good luck freind..

Will not show up in finder or on desktop,

Is it running? Of late Lacie have had loads of (well documented) problems with power supplies failing and also of some cases failing.
best thing is to connect it to another computer (Mac or PC) and see if it shows up there. That will either eliminate or confirm the drive (Use a known working cable though).

How do i install?

Make sure you don't have any drives (in Windows Explorer) that are not found or working, i.e Network attached or otherwise. THese can prevent the system from locating extenal drives/USB drives.

How can i do a Lacie backup of only what i have

It depends on the back-up software.
Some will let you specify what you want backing up and some don't.
However, is it such a bad thing that it starts from the beginning? Unless it does it every single time (which would suggest that something is wrong with the settings) it should only do a complete back up the first time. Each subsequent BU should only involve files that have changed since the previous BU.
If you cannot control what gets backed up then you can always do it manually - the way we did it before cheap HDs and BU software.

I brought my LaCie hardrive to my bf's and he put

He may have "unplugged" it before it was ready to be unplug or moved it when the drive was still spinning down.
or -- he must have handled it roughly or dropped it, even a little drop.
I think you need a new one (bf) ... The hard drive may still work... try every different USB port on your computer. If none work, then take it back and plug it into your ex-bf's computer and see if it works. Take your receipt with you.

Let us know ....... what kind of movies....
