LaCie HD won't show up on Mac desktop, quit showing up yesterday

Hello! Had the same problem - go onto the Lacie official website. Select whatever type of drive that it is you have, and simply go onto the software update page. I literally downloaded the desktop manager (I own the Sam Hecht Little Disk) and it appeared! Good luck

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap hope this helps

When i plug it in

The ticking noise is not a good sign at all! Try plugging it into a different computer and hope that it works. You need to get the files off of it ASAP.

The tikking sound you speak of is the disks inside your hard drive hitting each other, also known as a hard drive crash. This is BAD news if it is. Your data will not be able to be recovered if it has crashed due to physical damage. Try to get your data off of it as soon as you can, that is, if you still can

Sorry for your loss

I had windows vista when

Hi,

When you turn the machine on, you will need to enter the bios, this is usually done by pressing F2 or F10. when you have entered the BIOS you will need to navigate to a setting that will say something like "HDD settings, Raid Setting, AHCI Setting" you need to change the setting to say Compatability rather then AHCI.

Please rate and make a comment if you find this solution very helpful and might help others as well. Post more comments if you need more help.

Hope this helps

I'm looking for a Windows

You don't REALLY think that LaCie would pay a programmer to write a driver for a NEW piece of hardware to run on an OBSOLETE operating system, do you? Have you looked for a driver on the LaCie website? If you didn't find one there, I GUARANTEE you that you won't find one ANYWHERE, because drivers don't write themselves.

Of course, you can always call the company and complain, which is a waste of time, or pay a programmer to write a driver for it, or learn how to program and write your own driver. If you DO write a driver for it, you MIGHT be able to sell it to LaCie, if they're still in business by then, although the odds are excellent that nobody will want a Win98 driver by the time you learn how to write drivers.

My advice is, get a modern operating system, which will have all the drivers for your external hard drive embedded into it. Ubuntu is a good choice if you prefer Gnome, or Kubuntu if you prefer KDE.

You're running Windows 98, you probably have old hardware (similar to what I use), so in that case, you might prefer to use Xubuntu, which runs great on older hardware:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/maverick/release/xubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso

or Lubuntu, which is designed to save energy, which makes it great for older battery-powered equipment such as laptops or the new netbooks, or even for old desktop systems:

http://people.ubuntu.com/~gilir/lubuntu-10.10.iso

Pick a new OS and get rid of ALL the Windows ****: no more antivirus, antimalware, antispyware, or antiscareware programs running all the time, no more nasty ActiveX controls which allow your system to get infected when you open Internet Explorer, no more rootkit problems, no more need to defrag ANY hard drive EVER... Get rid of Windows, get rid of the headaches, and get FREE drivers that will work with your new external drive as soon as you plug it in.

Switch to Linux, and make your old hardware run faster than ever before.

Hard drive is not recognized

The flickering light signals that the internal controller board has failed. Unfortunately this is terminal, the external case is dead. If you're really lucky the hard drive inside it still has enough life left in it to allow you , when connected directly to a desktop, to copy all your files from it.
After that just junk it and get a new one.
