The drive has failed. It has either overheated, or completely died. Unplug it for a couple hours, then reconnect. If it's still doing the same thing, it's dead. If it comes back to life, it got too hot.

Make sure the USB, is connected properly.

I don't think it's worth contacting Adobe or other manufacturers, it's related to the External Hard disk, not with the adobe or ebooks. Try copy paste some other files like songs, mp3 etc..etc.. I guess they should show the same message.

In most cases it's caused by Virus and spyware so you need to run a full system scan using an update antivirus (or with several antiviruses). I would recommend Formatting, but you have to transfer all the files saved on the Hard disk to your computer and format it, otherwise you'll loose everything saved on it.

Let me give some hints, First of all, try it on another computer, try transferring files from the other computer to the hard disk and see if it's working or not, I guess, it should work fine, if so, transfer/copy all the files to the computer and format it. While you are transferring this, run a full system scan on your computer.
After it's formatted, restore all the files that has been transferred to the other computer. It should work properly by now.

This should be with all the files, not with the e-books alone.
