Possible that the logic control within the fan unit is defective if is seems to switch on both. For a start you can try to clean the remote pads to confirm if the pads are accidentally contacting when pressed for one function. If dimmer works then the selection mode could be the culprit.

They are just a low-end fan for Home Depot. The Hunters in Home Depot are also low-end. I personally would never buy Hampton Bay. Did you ever notice that the fan problems on here are mostly Hampton Bay, Harbour Breeze & Hunter?
