There should be some error .So you know how to remove the catridges just remove it n re insert it properly.If there are any paper jams try removing it also.and by the way if you haven't installed the drivers for HP deskjet this problem may arise.So make sure you ahve don this.Also this can be happened if the printer have some hardware problems.So none of this solutions are working its better to consult it with an expert.

Hi I think your printer has a parallel connector ( big D shaped socket with wire clips each end) on it if your pc also has a parallel plug get a parallel lead and install the drivers to use LPT1 this should remove the faulty USB plug from the problem

Depends which red blinking light. I assume the red light is the resume light. The green light is the power light. If the Power and the Resume light are blinking alternately, then you have a paper jam somewhere in the printer. remove the paper jam and you should be fine.

The only solution is a workaround :
If you have the W XP install disc , you can install a virtual version of W XP on your machine from http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
If you still have the install disc , you can also partition your primary and install W XP on the new partition from http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html.Back up your data first.

Both are easy and safe , no specific knowledge required .

Hello, if you lift the top cover there should be a little label with the correct ink cartridge numbers that you need to buy. I've got a Deskjet 845c, which is similar to your 840c, and the label shows 17 colour; 15 black. I suspect yours will be the same. No others will work as the printer was designed for those particular cartridges. They are still readily available in the shops or online. If you're in the UK try www.inkrite.com
