There is more than an issue to cause this. 1st that some iphones are locked on a specific operators, with a contract for one or couple of years. after end of contract you can unlock the iphone at the operator and can use any sim card. 2nd the sim card it self may be damaged & cannot be read by iphone, please try it in another phone and see if it is working. Sometimes it can take a while to restore the cell signal - since it has been a few days, I assume it has not yet begun to work. One thing I notice is that I often get carrier updates when I connect to iTunes right after a major update. If you did the update via itunes, you might have seen one - I'm on verizon so can't speak for all carriers. Assuming still no calling... First thing to try is to check the cellular settings for the phone - make sure it is set to use 3G for voice and data, possibly turn roaming on for voice. Do a power cycle off for 20 sec or so then back on. Assuming that fails, try going into settings, general, then near bottom, reset, then reset network settings - be sure to have your WiFi passwords since it will erase them as well.
