Dennis, quit fooling around with that OnBoard audio on that mobo.
Just install an economical sound card.

One example,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1747731&CatId=2771

This baby will S-M-O-K-E the onboard audio you have now. (Or did)
Just install in any available PCI (White) slot.

This is your board:
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130084
It is almost all Via with P4M900/VT8237A chips, VIA S Chrome 9(video), and VT1708 for sound. You can try MSI here:
http://www.msi.com/service/download/
or you can try VIA here:
http://www.via.com.tw/en/support/drivers.jsp
You can change the operating system but, it does seem to have support of Windows 7.

Look for jumper labeled JFP1. On this jumper are the following pinouts:

Pins 1&3 = Hard disk drive LED
Pins 2&4 = Power Indicator LED
Pins 6&8 = Power on/off switch
Pins 5&7 = Reset switch

I suppose, you won't be able to fix it that easily. Something is wrong with the keyboard and most likely you'll have to replace it. But I'd say that it is pointless. I mean, the laptop is a bit outdated so why not to get something better? There are so many options out there. If you need a laptop for doing job, here you can take a look at these laptops for quickbooks and daily accounting which can handle basically, any taks besides resource intensive ones like gaming, 3d rendering, etc.

Although I've got a different type of MSI but I have where the "official guys" say there should be: at the back of it, maybe you need to remove the battery and look there under "S/N: xxxxxxxx"

that 1996 is not correct (its series name only)
MSI N1996 Motherboard P6NG Neo-Digital MS-7505
the bottom sticker on the mobo tells what it really is.

MSI motherboard, just bought ? used"?
ever see it work before.
did you go to msi.com and the manual on setups"?
are you using the onboard VGA port to a VGA monitor.
The monitor shows no signal means exactly that.
This motherboard has 1 power jacks, the big one 24 pins
and the 4pin at top left of the fan.
you must use PSU v2.2 or newer to get that 4 pin power.
covered on page 24 in your manual, here.
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/P6NG_NeoDigital#down-manual

and CPU and fan, (correct)
and memory
and a power switch to the power switch jack.
next time post all stickers on mobo so we can see what it really is.
they made vast numbers of motherboards. a fact.

Well, you could uninstall anything related to the sound device. If you can, I suggest using the sound driver provided by the manufacturer. Let me know how it went, thanks.

Beeping mostly means it's trying to give an error code along. Listen to the amount of beeps and the duration of them. This is the error code that it tries to give on. Look up in the manual what the beeps mean and how to solve it.

Cheers!!

Need to replace the display flex ribbon cable to solve the flickering and color lines problem. This cable gets damage over the time of long usage.
