Windows XP doesn't come with the proper codecs to play DVD movies by default. You either need to buy a program with the codecs, or pay Microsoft for them. What I've found works best is to download the trial of WinDVD. It installs the needed codecs and you don't even need to use the program. So after you install it just use whatever program you originally wanted to use and you should be set.

(The older versions od WinDVD could be uninstalled while leaving the codecs behind, but the new version seems to remove them after uninstalling, so you'll want to leave it on the computer)

Hope that helps :)

Because it is an old model (end of service life and not supported anymore) and the battery possibly not holding any charge and needs replacing, i think this works ok on just the charger without battery.

Update your Adobe flash player software to the latest version:

If that doesn't fix it you might have some viruses and malware.

Start your PC and press F8 several times until the boot menu comes up. Then select "Safe Mode with Networking". Now get some or ALL of the FREE programs below.

Download, Install and Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:
When Installing choose the non-pro version.

Download, Unzip, Install and Run TDSSKiller:

Download, Install and Run Super Anti-Spyware:

If you have an outdated Anti-virus program then Download, Install and Run Avira Anti-Virus:
Make sure to select ALL of the "threat categories" when you install or configure Avira...

You should be in pretty good shape if you run and install all of these programs.

If everyting else appears to be working, hook a spare monitor to the video output usually on the back, if picture is okay the inverter board is more than likely bad located under the laptop screen, the other less likely is the backlight behind the display screen, but if both show the same symptoms it is the video graphics chip built into the motherboard.

The most common reasons for power issues are the battery, power jack and power adapter/cord.

Power off and remove the battery. If the laptop powers on with just the adapter connected, your battery is faulty.

If you move/wiggle the power adapter at the point where it connects to the laptop, and the power goes off and on, the power jack is the problem.

The power jack is inside the laptop and either needs soldering or replacement. If a power jack problem, it should be addressed by someone knowledgeable.

If no change, the power adapter is probably faulty and needs replacement.

Hope this helps.

The laser sensor is caked in dust - try to clean it with a can of compressed air and a q-tip. If that fails then you will have to replace the dvd unit - it will cost you around $60.

If there is power indication of the charging but the laptop does not power On at all then the fault is in the mother board, if there is no booting then check to see if the bios battery is faulty - replace.
If the PC comes on with the logo but does not boot up further then the possibility of the memory or the hard disk can be suspected. Check if you can go to the CMOS settings to see if the time has changed/ reset. If so check the battery, set time and allow it to boot , if not the memory/hard drive needs a check.

1. Test power adapter for output voltage. Bend the power cable in various directions while doing this to be sure that there is no broken conductors in the cable.
2. If power adapter is Ok, connect it & see if the power LED on the laptop will glow when you jiggle the power connector in various directions. If yes, then the DC jack might be loose or damaged, & need to be either re-soldered or replaced.
3. If not, then disassemble the laptop. Remove any components that attach to the laptop's motherboard first (e.g. battery, hard drive, RAM, wireless card, optical drive, ... etc.)
4. Next, remove the keyboard & the LCD screen.
5. Finally, unscrew all screws that hold the upper cover & lower cover together so that you could gain access to the motherboard.
6. Inspect the solder points connecting the DC jack to the motherboard. Make sure that none of them is loose. If any, re-solder them.
7. Inspect the center pin in the DC jack. Make sure that it is not broken or loose. If it is, then you might need to replace the DC jack.
8. When you are done, re-assemble back the laptop.

yes With the help of partition magic you can increase the size of c drive without losing any data.
You can also install programs in d drive so that the low disk space will be avoided.

you can download partition magic from the link http://www.4shared.com/file/19023943/92099487/Partition_Magic_82_Full.html?s=1

Hi thekittenisb

It seems like you have a bad battery. Now if you have the adapter pressed against the wall hard, you will eventually (sooner rather than later) break the connector going into the main board, and it will be an expensive repair. If its plugged in and its working, it does not matter how hard you plug it in, it will not do a thing. Now if you have it plugged in really hard just to get it to turn on, thats a different story, and that means that the connector is already broken.

If the first is true, it means your battery is dead and cannot be charged. If you have the option and have not done so, your best off getting a lithium battery.

The batteries do not have a long life span, however they can last longer if taken care of the right way. Generally with the batteries, you want to do a full charge before using it, and then using the battery until it empties how before recharging it. If you have it plugged in continuously, it will ruin the battery faster.

thanks adi

Take out the battery and make sure you can turn on the laptop with just the AC Adaptor hooked up.

If you can then you know the AC Adaptor is good. Try another known good working battery in the laptop, if the battery charges then you know that the old battery is bad.

If the laptop doesn't charge with a know working battery or a new one then you know that the motherboard is bad.
