First look at the buttons on your keyboard. Look for keys that have a sun or light figure on them. It will not be the traditional white color, probably blue, or red, some off color. A particular laptop is a Dell Inspiron, and it has the symbols on the Up and Down arrows. It looks like a sun symbol. The symbols are blue in color, which means there has to be another key on the laptop that is also blue, that you will have to press in conjunction with these keys to perform the function. This is similar to a function key on a calculator. The default setting on your laptop is going to be power conserving. Meaning that when you unplug your laptop, the screen will dim to save power. You can change this by increasing the brightness. So in conclusion, in order to keep your laptop screen bright, you need to turn up the brightness when the laptop is unplugged. Make note that when you do this, the power consumption will increase.

Hi, In this case to reset the laptop to original factory condition there are no softwares however your computer would be having a software built onto a partition on the hard drive which you could access by tapping the F11 or Alt+F10 key as soon as you turn on the laptop and you would get the Gateway recovery management window wherein you would need to select the option "Restore system to factory defaults".Or else you could also use the set of CD's that you had got with the computer. Note:-When reseting to factory defaults all the data on your computer would be deleted so please do take a backup of all important information before performing the steps also make sure all external devices are unplugged from the laptop.

I will advice you remove the battery from the system and try charge with the adapter, see if it will power on, it did not, the problem is with the power adapter, try get a similar power adapter to charge the laptop, id charges the laptop, it means you will need to get a new power adapter.

But from all indication, the power adapter is most likely the cause of the problem.

Take care.

Check the voltage to the power box with a volt meter. If it reads the exact current needed as labeled on the power control box you need to replace the battery instead. A dead cell is the most common problem causing this for your computer

There is a 15 pin VGA connector on that model so plug it in to an external monitor or an LCD television and see if you have video or not. If you do, then you need to check the LCD power inverter which converts the AC power from the wall to DC power. Since you had a power surge this would be the most likely trouble spot. If there is no video, the likely culprit is the video card.

I am assuming that the laptop runs without a problem otherwise, IE. even though there is no visual display, it boots, lights light up, beeps when it should, fans come on, etc. If all of that is correct, the culpret would be the video card. Unfortunately with laptops, they are a part of the motherboard, and you would have to order another motherboard and swap them out. For most people I would advise against it, but it sounds like you may have what it takes!

I had a similar problem some time ago, when i wanted to start my laptop, i could see the lights go on briefly and hear a click sound and then nothing. I tried taking out the battery and only using the power cable, still nothing.

I eventually descovered that it was my laptop's power supply which had given in. Not to expensive to buy. Hope this can help you.

Quite possible that the machine is defaulting to external display only. Check your BIOS for this and try any function keys/switches that are available.

Try going into safe mode upon startup by hitting the F8 button. If it does then hit safe mode to get into your computer. Go to start>accessories>system tools>system restore. Follow the wizard to restore your computer to a date earlier than when you started having problems. Let me know if you have any problems or questions.

try removing mem and removing hd check to see if clean re seat them and reboot,
could be bad sectors on hd,but sounds like unit been knocked or dropped and hd not seated properly...

If you are not getting any display on any monitors it leads me to believe the display did in fact go bad. This happens with electronics and probably nothin you could have done but when you take it to your appointment make sure they get any info you need off the computer and put it on a cd or flash drive for you. Sorry I didn't have better news for you but now at least you get to go shopping for a new machine. :)

Sounds like the hard drive crashed. Make sure the hard drive is seated back in properly, then hit the power button and listen closely. You should be able to hear it spin when the hard drive engages. If it does engage, you should hear it spin smoothly, if there are any clicking or dull thumking sounds, then it's shot and needs replacing.
