System recovery on a gateway 6214 laptop

Try This:
    • 1 Back-up any important files to an external hard drive, if at all possible, before proceeding.
    • 2 Place the Windows Install CD into the computer's optical drive. Restart the computer with the disc inside. As the computer starts up, it will prompt you to press any key to boot into the Windows Install CD, press any key to do so
    • 3Press "Enter" to bypass the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press "F8" to accept the Windows License Agreement. Windows Setup will ask if you'd like to install any available updates to the operating system. If you currently have a (wired) Internet connection, download the updates. If you do not, you can install the updates after the restore completes.
    • 4 Select the "Custom" installation route. Select the internal hard drive as the installation destination. Press "D" to delete any and all data on the hard drive. Confirm this action by pressing "L". Press "C" to create a new partition to install Windows. You will need to use the "NTFS" file system, as this is the Windows default.
    • 5 Continue the installation by following any on-screen instructions. You will be asked for the Product Key, your region/time zone and to create a name for the computer. The whole re-installation, reformat and restore process will take a little over an hour. Once complete, the computer will reboot to apply the finishing touches. Remove the Windows Install CD at this point to avoid booting back into the disc. The Gateway laptop will launch into a freshly restored Windows installation.

The bottom right 1/4 corner of the screen on my Gateway MX 6214 has turned white, with multiple colored lines and three black splotches. Can this be fixed?

With a new LCD screen, yes. Depending upon the age of your machine, and the cost of the screen, a new laptop may be more cost effective.

How brighten the screen?

Look on your keyboard on the "f" keys (f1, f2, etc...) for a symbol that looks like a sun or shining light. Something that would indicate brightness. Now, hold down the 'fn' (function) key on the bottom left of your keyboard and then press the backlight key you just found.

Gateway mx6214 will not powerup -bought a new

It is the plug in the laptop that is most likely the cause, plug the power supply in the laptop. Now put your thumb on the plug at the laptop, as you bend it sideways hit the power button repeatedly to see if it will power up, failing that take the main battery out of the laptop and use power supply only. Please take the main battery out first to see if your power supply will start the computer if the computer starts up change the battery.

My internet connection via Ethernet vanishes when

Sounds like it's connecting through wireless so when it's switched off, it stops.

Go to 'my computer' if you're using XP and right click, click 'properties'.

Go to hardware, then Device manager.

Look downlown list and choose 'network adaptors'.

See if both wireless and ethernet are working OK. Use properties to check.

How do I access the hidden partition to reinstall

Turn on or restart your notebook, then press F11 while your notebook is
starting.
3 Insert the Operating System Recovery CD/DVD when prompted. The System
Recovery program starts.
Click a system recovery option
Full System Restore (Destructive) reformats the hard drive and
restores the system software as it was when you purchased your
notebook. This process deletes your data files.
Full System Restore with Backup (recommended) moves the
contents of the hard drive to the C:\My Backup folder and installs
a new copy of Windows XP. This option saves your existing data
files, but all programs must be reinstalled and the program settings
reconfigured. You need at least 4 GB of hard drive space to use this
restore option.
5 Click Next. The System Restore - Format and Recover dialog box opens.
6 Click Yes. Files are restored to your hard drive. When file recovery has
finished, the System Restore dialog box opens.
7 Click Restart. Your notebook restarts, and Windows finishes its setup and
installation.
Important
After you restore your system, it will
appear with the same files and programs
it had when it shipped from the factory.
You still need to download Windows
updates and antivirus updates to bring
your notebook’s software up to date.
8 Reconnect your Internet cable and all USB peripheral devices. You are
done.

Hello i have an gateway 6214 labtop and the cr-rom

The CD drive in the MX6200 systems are not considered to be user replaceable.

From the description you gave the drive probably needs to be replaced. If you have not done so it will not hurt to attempt to clean the drive, but this is not likely to help and if the drive is not spinning a disk the cleaning disk will not run.
You can verify that this is a hardware problem by attempting to boot to a bootable cdrom. Your windows operating system CD is bootable. To test the drive, do the following:
  • Place a bootable disk into the drive.
  • Restart your computer.
  • As the system is starting up (as soon as anyting comes on the screen) start pressing the F10 key about once a second until the Boot Menu is on the screen.
  • Used the Up or Down arrow to select cd-rom and then press enter.
  • The system will either reboot into windows as normal or it will boot to the cd and attempt to start a reload. (If it starts a reload then choose to exit as soon as you can - it will copy a bunch of files first, they are not doing anyhting, they are just being loaded into memory to be used later is you complete a reload)
If the system does boot to the cdrom, the the drive is working and the problem is in windows and not the comuter. If it does not boot to the disk then the drive have gone out and needs to be replaced.
