make sure that the dvd burner is getting enough power test all leads that are attached to the dvd burner including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or the drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd burner then plug them back in this should activate the found new hardware wizard or you might have to uninstall then reinstall your DVD/CD or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device Click start control panel administrive tools,computer management,device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question mark ? right click you will have options to update driver,roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall hope this helps

you burner is suppose to read disks even when its not on a pc. check that out, ie disconnect it from the pc and insert a audio cd jus to check if it reads the cd, its suppose to spin and not stop. that shows its reading. if it doesn't then its dead. you will need to replac it

Cd's use a different file structure that dvd's. Dvd's use udf and cd's use cdfs. Try cleaning the drive with a cleaning cd and downloading the latest drivers for the drive from the NEC website for the easiest fix.

Every CD is burnt. If it reads for instance original installation CD's or audio CD's than the problem isn't in DVD ROM but either in a type of DVD (-R,+R...) or the problem is caused due to fact that DVD wasn't closed after burning on another computer.

Probably, but i need more details about the problem, your optical device does not support the speeds you wrote your previous cd/dvds. Try burning (on other dvd) some dvd at law speed and after that try reading it on your device.
Some models are so sensitive that they just need specific compact disk.
Did you take it new? if it isn't new, try cleaning it (with a special cleaner dvd disk).

one easy test to do is use a bootable cd and boot from cd instead of windows. if it boots its an issue in windows. if it don't boot its likely bad hardware.. i have exact same model drive for over a year

DVI video cables don't carry audio. Thus you need to use an audio extractor or converter instead of just an HDMI to DVI adapter cable. NEC Versa LX Screen no model told screen, a monitor is it"? the 1998 PC that? has no change at all to run zero. Pentium II (p2) relic, no modern OS run on it the coin cell battery and huge battery are toasted. hdd is bad. it has zero value now, and to fix it will be costly . the CCFL back lamps are dead. what is there to like, sure free in a garage sale. zero value. ,try moving from 1998 to 2010 to gain a future.

AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate) is common audio file format for mobile devices like mobile phones, laptops, portable recorders.. etc.

in fact totem movie player can't play any amr files (files encoded in amr codec) by itself. Totem Player depends on Gstreamer libs, which haves necessary media handling components .

from your post its not clear that whether your totem can't play movie files from the very beginning or just you can not play movies recently.

your totem player may lacks Gstreamer library files or somehow your Gstreamer libs got corrupted recently.
Reinstalling Gstreamer Library file may help you.
