You do not uninstall firmware. Rather, you install the relevant update. This is NOT the same as updating a printer driver. To find out if your printer has a firmware update, you go to the HP site and log in to the support for your printer. If such an update exists, it will list it. The flag blocks an optical sensor (U-shaped plastic block about 3/8" wide) to signal detection. If that sensor is very dirty, it may falsely signal paper is present. Try a computer keyboard vacuum cleaner first, then a cotton swab or wipe with isopropyl alcohol. Do not use a wipe with a chloride disinfectant chemical. The sensor could be bad, or something nasty has happened to the sensor wiring. If the document feeder is detachable, check the electrical connector.
