Sounds like you need to reinstall the sound driver, the should be located on your computer, or you can download then from IBM's website

I have the same problem with my IBM T60. Screen is very dark, and I have to move it up and down to try to get it to flicker on. Right now, I have another monitor plugged in.
The laptop is about 4 years old and has been used daily.

Turn the ThinkPad on. It gets the error 8611,
and you get a popup to TEST or RESTART.
- Type RETURN to Test -- this gets you to a screeen full of System Tests.
- Get out of the Test Screen, by typing ESC,
this gets you to the main BIOS 'Easy Setup' page.
- Choose 'Config', it comes up with: Memory; SystemBoard; Display, etc.
- Type: CTRL-D (undocumented!) -- this gets you into
the 'System Configuration Edit Utility', which allows you
to edit the BIOS BootCode in the CMOS (hack!).
- Change the value at Offset 20h from: 00, to: 01.
- Type F2 to Save, and then F3 to Exit the Hex Editor,
then type: ESC to get back to the 'Easy-Setup' page,
and select: Restart (hit Enter in response to OK?).
- It should now reboot, and bypass the 8611 error.

The error means that you have to change the BIOS battery first before trying to change the date and time.
As far as i know with IBM's the CMOS (RTC) battery is located under one of the panels underneath the laptop and is usually covered with red, blue or yellow plastic with wires coming from it. Disconnect the battery and replace it

Once the CMOS battery is replaced you can set the date and time and no more error messages.

Here is a video on how to remove it. Look at how they remove it and try to do the reverse with the new hard drive. Hope this helps.

Need to go to Lenovo and find your model's repair manual.

I think by "remove" he means "reformat." Just pop in your Vista disk and follow the instructions please...

Go into BIOS and select Default values.
That should take care of the problem
