This appears to be a bad laser, or dirty laser.
Purchase a cleaning kit from your local electronics store (5 - 10 dollars) and run it through the DVD player. If this does not resolve it you may need to contact an electronics repairman, or use your manufacturer warranty. Though these are mostly throw away technology and maybe more cost effective to replace with an updated model.

There are 2 possible causes:
1 - the door mechanism has a switch that cuts the power to the door motor when it's fully closed - this switch has failed, the motor still tries to turn when the door is fully closed and that is detected by the monitoring chip as a blockage in the door so it command it to open. You will need to find out this switch and see if it can be fixed or replaced.
2 - the controller processor of the dvd player no longer has control of the optical unit. Find out if the problem is in the optical unit (as i suspect) or the processor itself by checking the rest of the commands on the VCR side and the common settings - if they are ok then you will need a new optical unit.

When I get home I'm going to crack the shell on the DVD drive inside the combo set and see if it;s a simple 'off the shelf' RICOH/PANASONIC/MATSUSHITA DVD-R drive tho. If it is, the replacement part (but not the spec. part from Zenith) from Fryes might be faster and cheaper? Not sure yet.

you might have to initiate the tray opening mechanism and as it's trying pry the tray forward and force it open it might fix it.

The hotel mode is set by the remote control , not the control panel.
