On the opposite half as the plates. Look for but don't touch the big insulator at the top. The wire run from it to the bottom of the machine. Older ones have a cleaning bead and you must turn the entire machine upside then right side up several times to clean it. Mine had a latch on the back top with a label, " pull up to clean if crackling". I pulled it up and observed a wiper sliding up the big wire inside. I did it up and down several times and that fixed mine.

To stop the crackling sound, you need to remove all of the dust particles from the wire in the back. Sometimes when the unit is extremely dirty you can see sparks emanating from the wire, this is what causes the crackling sound. The unit has a built in cleaner you can lift up and down to perform this task, located on the top, but this doesn't work extremely well. I usually take a can of compressed air and blow as much of the dust I can off the wire and all surrounding internal areas as I can. To do this, approach the unit from the front, and turn the blade door slightly so the wire can be seen. This along with a thorough cleaning of the blades should eliminate the crackling noise. Of course, make sure the device is unplugged before performing any cleaning.

For years I have tried to clean the wires.Mine sometimes sounds like a bug zapper! Anyway, the only solution I have come up with is this.--I take a Very thin cloth(such as an old worn out washcloth) dampen it and carefully holding on to one corner, insert it into open top of unit. I jigglel it up and down. It will help loosen some of the debris on the wires. Also, at times I purposely let it drop inside and shake the unit up and down, then turn it upside down to let it fall closer to the top to get it out.Do this several times, rinsing rag and wringing out well each time.I clean the slats with a thin rag wrapped over a butter knife.All of this is time consuming, but it pays to do it. Iv'e had mine 11 yrs. and they are still working.Just make sure all of the components are completely dry before reconnecting unit.

The buzzing noise is not from dust in the air purifier, it's from the dust and pollutants in the air, it's now picking up. It should stop once the air is cleaned.
