The start/restart button does not work
Try unplugging the dishwasher for one minute then plug back in. If that does not work make sure that the controls were not locked. Sometimes there is a control lock to keep children from starting the dishwasher. Look for a button with a lock on it. You may have to press and hold this button for like 5 seconds or you may need to press a couple buttons together to unlock the panel. If this is not the case there may be a problem with the control panel. Remove the inner panel on the door and inspect the ribbon connector. Make sure the connector is fully inserted and the ribbon connector does not have any evidence of electrical damage. Worst case the control panel may need to be replaced.

On/off button needs replacing as it has broken off
usually the push/pull handles that turn older dishwasher on and off simply twist on and are threaded -- you shouldn't have to dissasemble anything... get a replacement and twist it on... "righty tighty" if I'm not mistaken

How to Start And use ???
I have the 6040 model, and it has a number of buttons on the left, and a dial on the right.
if yours is the same, then you need to select a program using the buttons "Normal" for example, then turn the dial to just after the top A selection (I mean just after this, by a few mm, it clicks past the A slightly)
this will then do a pre-was, and the main wash you have selected.
The other buttons are fairly self explanatory, like half load for a half load, pre wash to only do a pre wash etc...
Hope the helps!

Ariston Dishwacher error message
I found a very good page for this problem on the internet - http://www.almesberger.net/ld87/al03.html -
After reading that page, I knew exactly what to do. In my case, something had stopped the pump from working, So I could solve the problem without removing the pump.
