I worked round it by ditching my Canon scanner. I wil replace it with one from a manufacturer who is more Linux friendly.

Our Canon 8400F scanner worked

Hello.

Your software wouldn't know that your hardware component wasn't functional. So, I'd suggest first reinstalling the Canon 8400F software driver. Go to this link, select your Windows operating system, select the driver, download and install. Then, try transparencies again.

Hope this helps.

Scan is black

If the scanner light does not move or does not light up then the problem could be a broken belt drive ob the scanner lamp or the scanner lamp is faulty.

I have a canonScan 8400F

I have many years experience repairing Canon scanners so here is my suggestion for you.

I guess I have a couple of questions for you first. Does your computer recognize the scanner is attached to your computer? If so can you scan in any other program like Windows Paint? If you say yes to both of these then the problem is with configuring your adobe software. If you say no then we need to go back to basics. I would google Canon Canoscan 8400F Drivers, it should pull up a page that will take you to Canons official website. Download the latest drivers from Canon's official website, the drivers are dated and the ones towards the top should be the latest drivers. The drivers are free. Also while your there download the newest version of Capture Perfect its a utility program for scanning its free also but download the latest one. Now make sure your scanner is unplugged from your computer, the cable that goes from the scanner to the computer. Install the latest drivers on to your computer. Once they are installed, then with your scanner powered on attach the cable from the scanner to your computer. A window should pop up saying a new device (or drivers) is being installed. Once this completes reboot your scanner and you should be able to scan again.

I use Paint shop and in order for me to scan with my Canon scanner I need to go to aquire and image, from a scanner or camera, and then it controls the scanner and does the scanning for me.

I hope this helps you out.

My CanoScan 8400F stopped working.

I'd try contacting the seller FIRST and letting him know the product does not work for the models he advertised and you'd like to return the item for a refund. If that doesn't work, THEN file a claim with your credit card company or Paypal (credit card is preferable if you paid by that rather than paypal funds) and say the item was misrepresented.
Rather than splicing anything and damaging anything, I'd do that first. Then find a seller with high ratings for the same product. Ebay is the way to go rather than paying ridiculous factory prices.See if you can find the original manufacturer's part # (possibly off your broken power adapter), rather than just the scanner model #, and search Ebay for it, but click the "Search within description" box, as many bay sellers only include the actual part # in the auction description, rather than just the title.

CanoScan8400 Suddenly Doesn't Work

I had the same problem about a year ago. The solution was to replace the power cord AND don't leave it connected to the powers source when the scanner is not in use, or it will burn out again.

Problem with CanoScan 8400F that

If power supply is new, check the power inverter/conveter to make sure it is transfering the 12 volts to the usual voltage which is around 5 volts to each capacitor and resistor.
Check for any swollen capacitors or burn marks on the system board. Many of these do have an internal fuse that is located next to the power supply where it attaches to the main circuit board.

2,178,0 When scanning,

Try this
1.Open the CanoScan Toolbox.
2.Click the Save option.
3.Put a check in the box that states "Display the Scanner Driver".
4.Click Scan.
5.Click the Advanced Mode tab.
6.Make sure Select Source is set to "Platen".
7.Click the Preview button at the top left.
If the error still occurs, then most likely it will be a service issue.

One thing to check...see if the inside lamp illuminates when you turn the scanner on using the power button at the back left side of the scanner. If you get no light, then as mentioned before, then it will most likely be a service error.
