If you can no longer find this scale filter online or from the manufacturer, then you can still repair your original one and make it better than new! This fix has worked perfectly on my MEK17W kettle and it turns off properly when the water boils. Buy a piece of 3"x3" 100 mesh (150 micron, must be stainless) on Ebay - under $3 inc shipping. Carefully cut the old plastic mesh out of the original filter frame with an exacto blade and very lightly sandpaper the triangular face of the plastic frame that faces into the kettle. Then temporarily hold the stainless mesh to this inside face of the filter frame with a couple of clothes pegs and use a pencil to mark the triangular outline of the mesh so that it will fit flush against the plastic and also be no wider than the frame. Carefully cut the triangle of mesh to size with scissors. Thoroughly mix up a small portion of 5-minute 2-part epoxy glue (Loctite or JBWeld) with a thin wooden coffee stir stick and apply just a smear of glue to the frame. As soon as the glue starts to get tacky, gently fit the mesh to the frame and clip it there lightly with 5 plastic clothes pegs, 2 on each side and 1 at the bottom. To ensure their release, you can first wipe the pegs (where they pinch together) with the faintest skim of Vaseline or sewing oil. Let the assembly set for 24 hours and then carefully ease off the pegs. You will now have a filter that will last longer than the kettle.

Call 1-800-233-9054 and ask Salton/Toastmaster for part number 31036 for the MEK17W kettle. You may as well buy 2.When this scale filter in the spout of a Melitta MEK17W or Toastmaster TEK17W (identical kettles) gets torn the kettle does not hold in enough steam to trigger the auto off switch. Same thing happens if you do not fully close the kettle lid. Those units are thermally protected against over heating and yes it will overheat and the device will shut it down. However it may be a thermal fuse and need to be replaced if it opens. Then you need to ask if you want your home protected by a 99 cent part or if you want to keep an eye on it so it wont overheat.

Did it not come with a user manual? Sugar goes in the top next to the juice chamber. There should be a flip up lid sort of like on a coffee maker. Btw, I found a user manual online in less than thirty seconds so if you find that you need one then it should be really easy to get. I wouldn't be surprised if there are dozens of videos that teach you how to pour sugar into this machine.

I would suggest that the standby light is there to let you know that the unit is ready and waiting for you to set it and for use. Much like any appliance such as TV,s etc have standby lights. Any appliance with a standby light use a small amount of power. When not in use, its recommended to turn it off at the power point to save a bit of power.

You need to make sure the inner pot is making complete contact with the center heating element in the bottom center, and that the metal surface of the center contact is free of contaminants like oil or food particles. If this does not clear the error message you might need to replace the contact switch on the bottom of your unit. Switch replacement procedure depends on the model of your unit.
